The Shocking life - LegendOfTheWolf - 12-07-2010 Emily lay back, trying not to scream with the pain. Several corridor lights flew over her head, she clenched her fists tightly due to the pain, another stabbing pain hit her and she let out a large breathe of warm oxygen, and inhaled more. Emily looked to the left of her, the nurse looked deadly ahead, while the other nurse to the left of her was checking some of the measurements on a plastic bad with clear liquid in. Emily let out a large gasp as another large feeling of pain swept over her. "Try and stay calm miss" One of the nurses said, holding Emily's shoulder, as the bed turned another corner. Emily looked at the nurse sharply, she was about to say something but the pain again covered her vocals cords. Within a few more seconds, Emily entered a medium sized room with a few people in, the nurses guided the bed to the centre of the room. "Doctor Holiday, has been notified, he'll be shortly. Please try and stay calm" One of the males said standing by Emily's side. "Shortly? How long is shortly? Emily asked, looking sharply at the man. "Shortly.." He replied, nodding slightly. "Oh good ! Because that's reassuring !" Emily moaned, resting her head on her pillows forcefully. She tried to keep the thought of pain away from her mind, but it kept crawling back in.. The Shocking life - Doc Holliday - 12-07-2010 The staff entered the room with Emily. There was Dr. Holliday in a set of off-duty clothes as he had only time enough to throw a smock on. "Over here," he directed to the team, the hover gurney being placed in the spot he designated. Around her was the various medical equipment of the sick bay, respirators, EKG, defibrillator, supply cabinets and so forth. He then looked to the head nurse, "When did this start?" "I'm not totally sure but when she called us she said that she was in full labor," answered the nurse. "Vitals?" he then asked her. "BP is 136 over 90, pulse is 120," she answered. As he got his information, the rest of the team prepped her and the room for a child birth that would be just over three months premature. Inside, he was scared. Not for himself but for the child that he knew may not live but a few minutes upon birth. Looking under the sheet that covered her, he saw that she was fully dilated. He then looked to his patient and did his best to re-assure her that things would be OK. Before he could say a word, the head nurse looked to her boss, "Contractions have been about a minute apart. Doc, this kid isn't going to wait." Deep down, he feared the worse. He knew the chances of the child's survival were slim at best. Still, he made no mention of it and managed to hide his feelings. He felt for Emily as well. Such a young woman who would be subjected to so much trauma so soon. He put on a smile for her as he brushed her sweat dampened hair from her face, "Emily, it's time." With that, he took a position to where he could deliver. "OK, Emily, push!" he instructed. The Shocking life - LegendOfTheWolf - 12-07-2010 Emily tightly gripped the bed under her, with no hand to hold from her to-be husband. The tightly shut her eyes, wishing it would be over soon. Her breathing increased more than she had before getting ready to make the first push. The only thing she wished for was Keith being present, and having a healthy baby. Emily gulped and made her first push, a whole new level of pain crawled it way through her spine before reaching the back of her throat, she cried, and inhaled another pocket of air, she gripped the bed more untill her nails were near enough tearing through the material, and she pushes again, and this time alot harder than before. Emily opened her eyes, only to see Dr. Holiday staring at her. "Come on! Keep pushing !" He instructed. Emily nodded slightly, and pushed. This time leaving her eyes open, her neck was rested on her pillow while her head remained up, looking down at herself. She panted hard, only getting short inhales of air. "Come on! Don't stop now, you need to keep going" Dr. Holiday stated, as he could tell Emily was already getting worn out. She knew she had to keep pushing, but her body didn't want to, her muscles were tired and worn out. Emily inhaled as much air as she could before having another attempt.. The Shocking life - Doc Holliday - 12-08-2010 Noticing her struggles, a nurse took her hand, allowing Emily to squeeze it as needed. As she pushed, Doc noticed that she was crowning. "Emily, I know you're tired but one more ought to do it," he said to her. With a quick break, she did as he requested and it was enough for the baby's head to come through. "I have the head," he said. But, his concern grew as it was very small but then it was 3 months early. "Emily, one more," he told with some encouragement. Push she did, exhausting herself to where she fell back, completely and totally exhausted. But in Doc's hand, he had most of the child as he was able to get it the rest of the way out himself. "Nurse," he called, "scanner, please," as he reached back with a free hand. The baby was tiny and very underdeveloped. He was scared but didn't show it. It fit in one hand, and wasn't moving. The scanner in hand, he read the signs as another nurse cut the cord and crimped it off. Emily was too exhausted to look. And it was a good thing as a dismal look crossed Doc's face as he shook his head. Then, quietly, he ordered, "staff, leave the room." His staff just looked at him and there was a moment of silence. They read his face and they just knew. One by one, they each left, the nurse holding Emily's hand giving that final squeeze of re-assurance as she let go. As the door shut, Doc took a seat next to her, holding the child in a small blanket that he had taken nearby. "Emily, I don't know how to say this but your daughter won't live but a few minutes. She is severely underdeveloped and her lungs, well, can't sustain her," he explained quietly but sincerely, "I'm sorry but I can't save her." He then placed the small child on her mother's chest, "Emily, what few minutes she has I think need to be spent with you." He paused a moment, "It's what I would want." He then stood up, "I'll leave you two to your peace and will be right outside so call me when you need me." The door then slid shut behind him. For Doc, this was a dismal first. He stood in the Shasta Hallway, alone, with only the sound of the station power system as his company. This one hurt too much. He did his best and failed. Knowing of the mother in the other room giving a good-bye to her child, he leaned against the wall. As he began to weap, he slid to the floor before he wept into his forearms, waiting for the grieving mother to call him back. The Shocking life - LegendOfTheWolf - 12-09-2010 Emily looked down at her newly born child, she had dreamed this very moment for many months, though she didn't expect it to end so suddenly. She rocked the child gently, tears slowly slid down her face, though she smiled at how beautiful her baby daughter was despite the tears of sadness. Though Emily didn't expect the shock of giving birth to her baby, and saying good-bye on the same day she dealt with the pain and loss well. "Katie Davis" Emily said softly, rocking the child slowly. "That was what your name was going to be" she continued. "You were going to get a brilliant job, find a man, and settle down" Emily wiped some tears from her cheek, she sighed quitley. "Kate Davis" She repeated, this time more quiter, almost a whisper. Emily gulped, and more tears were born from her eyes, this time more heavily. "I'm so sorry dear" She lowered her head down towards her child, and tightly hugged the child, knowing this would be the only time she could do this. Emily fealt the small exhaled from the childs lungs each one getting slower, and slower. Emily gently kissed her child on the forehead, before leaning back. "Rest in piece, I'm so.. so sorry" Emily apologised again. The babys breathe had almost expired before Emily took a final look of her baby. She listened, and watched her child before the faint sound of it's breathe was gone, she tightly closed her eyes, which only released more tears. It was a few more seconds before Emily wiped the tears from her cheeks, and called Dr. Holiday back in. "Doctor Holiday" She said softly, but loud enough to be heard from the corridor. The Shocking life - Doc Holliday - 12-10-2010 He walked back in the room, the only sound made was the door sliding open and then shut. His own face red from his own tears, he walked up to her side and sat down, never saying a word. He watched the mother holding her now deceased child, crying harder with each passing moment, listening to her apologize over and over. He hated this. A man committed to saving lives could do nothing, especially to someone as innocent as a newborn child. He could only look at the child for a moment as it made him think of his own daughter. He felt lucky right now, knowing that his own little girl was on station for a few days. He couldn't even fathom how he would feel if he lost her. He looked at the child again and then Emily and then he just hung his head in thought. Finally, after minutes of silence that seemed like an eternity, he just softly said, "I am so sorry, Emily. But...." He just sat back, to upset himself to continue. Yes, the death of a child was the one thing that he just couldn't deal with. The Shocking life - LegendOfTheWolf - 12-13-2010 Emily looked at Dr. Holiday, knowing anything he would say wouldn't help her, she looked back down to her child still rocking it slightly. There was no noise, no background sound, just pure silence between Dr. Holiday and Emily. Emily looked back up to Dr. Holiday, noticing his blood shot eyes, and realising he wasn't coping any better than herself. Doc looked up to Emily, noticing she was staring at him. She smiled just slightly, trying to comfort him without saying anything, however her tears in her eyes told a different story. After a few seconds of silence, Emily brought up the courage to break it. "I... I know you did your best Doc" Emily softly said, trying to keep a slight smile on her face. The Shocking life - Doc Holliday - 12-14-2010 He looked at her and just sighed. He briefly looked at the deceased child she continued to nurture and then back to her and softly replied, "I know I did." He sighed again and looked at her, his eyes still red, "I know as a medical professional that there was nothing I could have done but do you know what bothers me the most? It's so unfair when children die, no matter how. Recently, I just processed the death certificates for two bombings on Freeport 9 and Freeport 1. Of the 800 deaths in those two incidents, half were women and children." He sighed again, "I've seen enough of it and seeing Katie not even have a chance well, that just sealed how I feel." He looked at her, realizing that in all of the trauma and anguish, he had ignored her medical needs. Letting her continue to have her time, he stood up and began cleaning her up. Fortunately, such a small child left little mess. Still, he washed what was there, gave her an exam and then sat back down beside her. "I have a request of you," he asked, "it's a bit odd but I like to have a face with ever death certificate I sign. I would like to take Katie's picture for my records. I promise that I'll make her look, well, Angelic." He added, "If you need me to, I'll make arrangements for a proper service and burial." He just sat again, "But, please, take all the time you need." Although he said nothing of it and kept it hidden, he felt sorry for Emily. He felt guilty for not being able to do his job even if it wasn't his fault. He looked at her again and finally managed a weak smile of his own. The Shocking life - LegendOfTheWolf - 12-14-2010 Emily lifted her head to Dr. Holiday, understanding about what he had to put up for his job, death. Something Emily has done when she was in the force, but she didn't realise it had that effect on doctors. She then lowered her head to her daughter, after a few more seconds Emily nodded. "If you need to have a picture of her, then feel free to do so" Emily looked up at John, which nodded silently. The door opened ever so slightly to create a small sound, Emily heard it and quickly turned, stood behind the circular window was a face which Emily recognised, but haven't seen for 17 years. "Hidden in the shadows" Emily heard John say, she quickly turned to him. "What?!" Emily said, fear in her voice. John looked at Emily curiously. "I said, are you OK?" He asked. Emily moved her head back a bit "Yeah.. I thought I saw... Hm, never mind" Emily said, still a little confused. Seeing a face she hasn't seen since when she was 5 scared her, though it had been 17 years since, the face was still fresh in her mind, a face which she wanted to forget. Emily looked over to the window, only to notice the face gone. John looked where Emily was looking. "You sure?" John asked, Emily looked back to John and nodded. Emily couldn't stop thinking about what she saw, it's all she thought about, it scared her too much, even if it meant not thinking about Katie.. The Shocking life - Doc Holliday - 12-17-2010 She insisted she was OK and he accepted it. Standing up, he pressed the com badge on his shirt and requested a digicam be brought to him. Within a few minutes, a nurse brought it in and left. Doc saw Emily, still holding the child on her body. He just held up the camera and snapped a picture of mother and child unbeknown to her. He put it in his pocket and walked over to a small table at the end of the room. He lined it with a pillow and some blankets. He then aimed a small white light from the wall. He then walked over to Emily and put his hands out, "Emily, if I may, I need Katie for a moment." She handed her daughter over and with much care, he carefully placed her on the pillow. He covered her with a blanket and laid her down. Her head was turned towards them. Then, Doc turned off the room light. The spot light was adjusted to where it shined just over her head, giving the appearance of an Angel. Satisfied, Doc took the picture...and then another...before turning the room light back on. As carefully as he set Katie up, he removed her from the pillow and gave her back to her mother. He again hit his com badge. "I need these pictures printed as soon as possible," he said. "Yes, Doctor," was the response. After a few minutes, the nurse returned with an envelope. Doc opened it and removed the picture. He forced a smile as he looked at it. For as tiny as she was, she looked so normal. He then looked to Emily and Katie, "I do hope that this is to your liking." He then showed her the picture: http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:oYRrTiS...web.jpg&t=1 Afterward, he then confessed, "Emily, when you weren't looking, I took this one as well. He then showed her the picture. http://topnews.co.uk/images/imagecache/mai...mature-Baby.jpg He just stood, his hands behind his back, as he could only hope for her approval. |
