Time to Bid Disco Farewell - NonSequitor - 01-07-2008

I had high hopes for this mod and server. The RP element is truly this place's strongpoint. I enjoyed it alot.

One of my first encounters was in Omega-41. I had just undocked from the Zoner base, when a Corsair gunboat intercepted me. I figured I'd try to flee, since he had the gunboat and I had the Hammerhead with level 8 guns (Veangence). He eventually dropped me out of cruise and spanked my sorry behind. Well, I thought, that was inevatible. Outgunned and outclassed, but I didn't get discouraged. I nearly had enough saved up for the Manta. I could slap some buckshots and adv. debbies on that bad boy and then maybe I could at least drop the next gunboats shields...

Well, today I was Sigma-13 just tooling around in my Manta, when I heard an Outcast belittle some other pilots. I caught up to him to scope out the situation. He was flying a gunboat. I opened fire with the full suite of weps: adv. debs, buckshots and veangences. I think I managed to drop his shields a milimeter or two before he started to run some tests on the hull integrity of my new ship with his flak turrets. I got away that time, so the story didn't end on such a grim note.

I haven't flown months or even weeks on this server, but I have play alot of FL during the last 4 years. I've been a few servers, none of which are perfect. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Even with a lack of experience here, I nonetheless have come to the conclusion that this server favors cap ships at the expense of the fighters.

I didn't come here for the capital ships. I understand that many pilots like them for various reasons; all power to em. I like having them around. They do inspire a certain amount of awe. But personally, I'd rather eat a handful of thumbtacks than pilot most capital ships. Just not my idea of a good time. I prefer VHFs.

It would seem to me, that a VHF equipped with lvl 9 or 10 guns should at least drop a gunships shields with reasonable effort, i.e. 10-15 successful passes. Why does a gunship shield have a 7-digit number? Or was it an 8-digit? With all that banking and twisting and shooting and yelling, I has some difficulty reading my scanner.

When I noticed that the buckshot's damage output was reduced, I admit that I was dissappointed. Why on earth did this gun and many others get altered this way? The energy drain seems to be increased as well, at least on the buckshot. I'm not sure, but it definitely seems that way. And the adv. debilitator really got nerfed: 506 pts of shield damage. In the Vanilla version the gun inflicts 806 pts of shield damage. Kinda makes this pilot grumpy. The energy drain still seems to be the same though, ironically enough.

Some pilots are having some issues coping with the new npcs. Maybe it might help it the weps were restored to their previous "glory". More boom for the boomsticks. I don't have a problem with the nomad weps being toned done. If they weren't, everyone and their Uncle Rupert would be using them. So much for rp.

Anyway, I have a hard time enjoy this mod in its present form, which is real pity. The ships seem to be well designed and the new storyline is intriguing.

So, I will return to my old server and attempt to develop rp there. Good luck everyone and thanks for the fish.

End of transmission.

even though its a bit sad to see you go, id like to point out that a single fighter should not be able to take down a gunship, on its own, with even sufficient effort.

you wanna see fighter pvp, and say you havent seen it, well, id say you havent seen in the right place. the best one to start off is the RM. they ALWAYS use fighters/bombers in game, and only bringing the cap ship out VERY rarely (im in the RM, so i got first hand experience)

yes, cap ships are becoming a common sight, which personally isnt a great thing, but remember every cap ship falls at the hand of a skillful fighter/bomber wing.

a single fighter/bomber should not be able to take down a gunboat or a gunship. it wouldnt be possible to start off, if the gb/gs is conc. all fire on you etc. anyway, if we can persuade you to stay here, we will love to try, and id strongly recommend you trying to explore the brighter places of sirius, and find what you are looking for.

cap spam is most common with independants, who literrally think that having the biggest cap ship, with the mest guns and armour makes em invincible. me and some others have made them think twice when i fly in my bombers squad, and i'm just a decent fighter pilot. there are some others here who are so much better than me in handling ships, but thats another point.:P

all in all, to end my lecture, id say give it another shot. if you dont like it still, fine.

Time to Bid Disco Farewell - LancerZero - 01-07-2008

I hear ya, Megiddo...a lot of times, I feel outclassed when flying in my VHFs. However, there are a few things I'd like to note...

The gunboat almost certainly had a graviton shield; it's what they come with, and it's most effective against pulse weapons (among others). All gunboat shields have 140k points of protection. If you want to take out a gunboat one-on-one, you'll need a bomber; and the BHG has a superb bomber. Get one of those and a Supernova, and gunboats will run from you!

Even a bomber with quad imp. debs has some trouble getting a gunboat's shields down; it's the Supernova (or Inferno) that does the job.

I hate to see a talented RPer like you leave because of something like this. Any chance of reconsidering?

Time to Bid Disco Farewell - mwerte - 01-08-2008

Hey we just got to know each other a bit (I'm [RoS]Vengence btw).

I would hate to see you go. Please reconsider. This game has a harsher learning curve (esp with this mod and the NPCs and Capships being what they are) and I would encourage you to reconsider.

Please stay. Who else whould come help me harras the LSF?

Time to Bid Disco Farewell - Spear - 01-08-2008

Sad news I hope you reconsider. We only spoke once and I am afraid I was very busy at the time to be able to be more helpful.

I am as most here know a VHF flyer myself. CAP's are nice but good God they have become so many yet again. I am afraid to bring this up as people might suspect I want them in a fighter so I can kill them 1 on 1:D

Discovery is a victim of it's own sucess. With a great mod and a great server that can hold so many. Every new player that arrives power trades so they can afford to fly the CAP they want. Balance is a tricky thing to find, as a VHF I have to pick my opponets. I never take on a Gunboat or larger alone, i call for assistance or fall back.

I agree with frozen 1 fighter should not be able to take a GB, it should take 2. 1 Gunboat should not take a cruiser, it should take 2 etc etc. Thats assuming all the pilots are of an equal level with equal loadouts, just using it as a guideline. I just wish more players would appreciate the thrill of fighter on fighter dogfighting as opposed to buying a large ship and just sitting still and firing in your floating city. CAP's bore me to tears, although I understand it's infurating for new players to come across experienced ones and get killed quickly. Rather than take the time to learn they go out and buy a ridiculous sized ship forcing others to group together and kill them. Lets face it, most of the independants here have no RP for their CAP ship they just bought it to shoot stuff, not RP.

Frozen is also correct with regard to RM using only fighters (Once I saw one in a GB and was shocked!). It's why I enjoy my Unioner (another fighter faction) char so much. There are others out there but I can understand your frustration with the Caps. I have to keep a pack of ships handy to deal with Libertys threats.

I am also a 4 year VHF Freelancer vet and I would very much like to see someone with that much experience and willingness to RP stay. Hell I will even give you the money for a top of the line VHF and equipment just to test my guns against yours. Here you can RP different chars and I would welcome a fellow VHF lover in the LSF like a shot. God knows we need the help what with the constant assault on Liberty at the moment.

If you have set your heart on leaving so be it, good luck in whatever the future holds for you mate :)

Time to Bid Disco Farewell - Jihadjoe - 01-09-2008

Yeh tell me about it. I've been ripped apart by Gb's and larger repeatedly in my VHF but thats fair enough really. However there are far too many caps about, I personally reckon that battleships should be limited to factions and very experienced players only, and in very small numbers, though I ain't gunna be popular for saying it.

There are still loads of opportunities for some decent fighter on fighter dogfights and they are a lot of fun. RoS rarely use caps but we have a strong fighter and bomber force. maybe you should head out to alpha for a bit of a giggle.
