My say on RP. - Frrz - 02-09-2011 I'm new to the forums, but I'v been playing on the server for a couple months. Now people will probablly disregard this post because I'm new, some people might not read it because of length. This doesn't matter to me, I only want to express what I feel about RP in game. I'm not telling anyone to change, just think about things that could improve overal fun within the game. This isn't some short post that, a flamer would post, I believe it's somewhat well thought out and hits some good points. Anyway, please give feedback on your feelings, don't be trolling. Please? ---- What makes good RP? People that go with the flow. What makes bad RP? Single minded douche- bags. First off I don't want this to be a flame thread, I want this to be a civil. I am not here to tell people how to play the game, or what the have to or need to do. I'm posting this explain MY opinion on GOOD RP. I'm not talking about RP outside of the server on the forums, because I don't read them too often, I'm talking about interacting with other players in game. I will be separating this post into four sections. -First Contact -Starting Negotiations -Initiating Battle -Pirating Again this is IN MY OPINION. I'm not telling people how to play. I'm suggesting ways for people to improve the experience on all levels. --- First Contact The biggest problem with first interactions is either, 1) Everyone in the game is playing the "I'm too Badass For You." OR 2) Everyone in the game is a single minded douche-bag. Now you'll probably ask what I mean by "I'm too Badass For You." Of course there are other words to describe what I'm talking about, but I used the first thing that came to my head. Generally someone who is "ItBFY" is one that just argues with you, and always assumes they are in authority, even if they have no authorization in said system that they are flying in. People can also be classified as single minded douche-bags. Again you might ask what I mean by this; this generally means people that don't want to listen to someones RP, and just kill them or force them out of the system. Let's look at an example. For the purpose of this example we are going to assume that "ItBFY" has authorization to force a player out of a system. Quote: Now, again I know this is extreme, but can you people point out bad RP here? Let me help, first off, ItBFY gives Starflier only thirty seconds to comply. You should NEVER, force a time limit on someone. This just causes stress and makes the encounter twelve times more unfun. If the person starts to run, or doesn't comply in say, a minute, THEN determine appropriate measures. Time limits are never fun, especially for people that type slow. The next problem within this example is the fact that ItBFY isn't listening to Starflier. He doesn't give two s**ts what he has to say. Of course you can play a character like this but, there is no fun in it if your constantly threatening someone and they don't get a change to talk or RP their way out, more on general interaction in the next section. The last problem is that the time between the battle initiating word and when the battle started. More on this in later sections. --- Starting Negotiations Another big flaw in RP is the point that no one goes with the flow. I also feel as if people don't want to RP, or that they are always aggressive because they don't pay attention to RP of another player. This makes it frustrating for people that have cool back-stories and are unable to RP in an fun and enjoyable way. If someone is playing a pacifist, and no one listens to them and just yells at them to leave/get-out/f**k off/whatever how do you expect that person to RP? The amount of people that seem blood-thirsty is both unbelievable and irritating. All I'm saying is give the other person a chance, don't just start shoving them out of the system. Try going it the flow for once, see what the other person is trying to say, you might see an opportunity to make a twist in the conversation that could even make it humorous. I'm going to explain some scenarios that show good and bad negotiations. Of course I'm not going to list an entire dialogue because it would get too long, I'm just going to give a general overview of what could happen. By the way, these events actually occurred in some way, I'm not going to say any names to keep them private. For the purpose of these two examples, the AiCore, is a research vessel who is studying the human reproductive system. Also I do know there are some regulations about cruisers in Liberty Space, and I do take in account those regulations in these examples. Although not as fully as they should be. Bad RP Setting: New York Ships- AiCore: Ai Cruiser LNBS: Liberty Battleship Quote:The AiCore heads over to Detroit munitions looking for willing test subjects, doing absolute nothing This is just to show an example of the ignorance of the players on the server, who either don't care or don't seem to care about others. Good RP Setting: New York Ships- AiCore: Ai Cruiser LNBS: Liberty Battleship Quote:The AiCore is coming out of the back-way from Alaska and heads over to Manhattan. The LNBS I hope people can take that as encouragement in which to spark the better RP within everyone. --- Initiating Battle People may say that there is no problem in attacking almost right away, or less than two seconds after the initiating word. That's were people are wrong. Last time I checked doing so is AGAINST the rules. This one is more of a rule enforcement that an opinion on my part but, oh well. In the example a couple paragraphs up up with the Starflier, the ItBFY initiated the fight less than a few seconds after the initiating word. Doing so doesn't give the defender much of a chance at all. It's basically a 'You die now b***h.' With basically no chance for escape or anything. This really pisses me off, especially when the attacker puts a time limit on you. People that give time limits RARELY stop the time to let you type, or even give enough time between the 'one' and them firing upon your ship. This has to be one of the most annoying things within the RP community. Of course you people can fight, but give the defender a chance, seriously. --- Pirating I'm not saying you shouldn't, I'm not saying you can't, I'm not saying you have to do it peacefully, but there are some general guidelines that people should follow when pirating. 1) Don't ever use countdowns, as stated before it just puts stress on the person 2) If the person either tries to run, or doesn't reply for say one minute, then use hostile force, but give them time to type! Not everyone types one-hundred words a minute. 3) I believe this one is a rule, I could be wrong though. Don't tax an overly large amount of money. Say about five-million MAX is a good number. Adjust as you please, but going above seven to eight is really pushing it. 4) If your demanding cargo rather than credits, demand an amount the equals around five-million. If a miner is out mining in Dublin and has a full cargo of 2750, don't demand the full cargo. 2750 x 10 000 = 27 500 000 By no means is that anywhere near five-million. Don't be a jack-ass, only demand around five- hundred. --- Generally try to make the RP experience fun for everyone, and not just yourself. Again this is my opinion, you can play the game how you want. --- tl;dr Don't be a douche, go with the flow. As well as some pointers about pirating. My say on RP. - BalckWidow - 02-09-2011 A really enjoyable read and great points..yet at the same time, people will read this and shrug it off because they are douche bags and only think about No1. My say on RP. - Enoch - 02-09-2011 Ok. You seem to think people should RP just to please other people. This is not the case. Quote:You should NEVER, force a time limit on"I'm pirating you, but feel free to answer me 3 days later, I have a lot of time to spare." No ? No. AI and LNS story : Quote:This is just to show an example of the ignorance of the players on the server, who either don’tNo. This is an example of a character role playing his Cap ship as commanded by an officer who obeys orders and laws. Quote:2) If the person either tries to run, or doesn’t reply for say one minute, then use hostile force, butWhy should I give him time to type ? He's trying to run ! And if I left him one minute, he had time to type. My say on RP. - Pinko - 02-09-2011 Pretty much this, save for all the Navy not shooting an AI searching for test subjects stuff. That's a bad example, since, with all the Nomad stuff and xenophobia people has, better safe than sorry. My say on RP. - Boss - 02-09-2011 I pirate people. I'm a gentleman pirate. I stay a gentleman pirate until people try to run/scream for help/PM 378493193546 battleships. Then I start counting. Long post. Some good points. Rambles a little bit at times. Welcome to Discovery. My say on RP. - Enoch - 02-09-2011 Quote:Initiating BattleWhen I read this I wonder why do you play on Disco. Attacking right away is authorized, logic, and most of the time the only proper RP reaction. Do you expect a Navy officer to talk to a pirate during half an hour before he starts shooting on him ? Yes ? Try another game. And this "you should let the other guy time to react" part is wrong as well. Quote:With basically no chance for escape or anythingIf my character wants another character dead, well yes, he won't let him a chance to escape. You also seem to misunderstand the rule 5.2 : It is not about engagement notice, it is about giving a RP reason for the attack to occur. Warning your opponent you are going to attack him sounds kind of silly most of the time. My say on RP. - dodike - 02-09-2011 ' Wrote:4) If your demanding cargo rather than credits, demand an amount the equals around five-million.Exactly what I expected when opening this thread. Good pirate RP = pitiful demands My say on RP. - BaconSoda - 02-09-2011 I like what you're saying, but honestly, both sides of an RP encounter can be very stubborn. I agree, people need to go with the flow, but even in your examples, I see that it's going with your flow. For example, yesterday I was playing a lawful character who stopped a smuggler with Cardimine. The smuggler offered me a bribe. I was considering it, but then he made a mistake and sent a message to me instead of the Rogue he was calling for help. Suddenly it became apparent to me that this person was not honest, I could not trust him to keep the bribe secret, and I would lose my job/position if I took it, so I kept going straight and ended up destroying him. I pmed him afterward saying what it was fun to see corrupt RP and that if not for that mixup, I would have taken the bribe. He responded by saying "I really wish you had taken the bribe." Well, I actually just explained why I didn't to him; he made it unclear as to whether he could be trusted even in this, so I didn't take it, and this was my flow, but because I didn't take the bribe and go with his flow, I was somehow inflexible. Roleplay is fluid and both sides have to be. Even if you feel you are, you should still keep this in mind. One thing which really has to be remembered about sentient AI is that in Cargo missions, they are illegal. The mission commission sends you out to destroy them because they are unpredictable and dangerous. If my lawful characters saw a sentient AI, they'd flip out and send it away, especially one in a big ship. Who knows what it'll do? Experiments should be registered and legal things; some random Cruiser coming around making "Experiments" is not what I'd call a good time for the Republic of Liberty. That is my flow, and we should both flow with our own flows. Staying set on your course to experiment on women is also being inconsiderate to my RP viewpoint and my RP wants. My say on RP. - AndrzejB - 02-09-2011 @"1) Everyone in the game is playing the "I'm too Badass For You."" - True to some extent. But it is not bad in itself. People play video games/roleplaying games because they want to 'be' somebody different than in reality (but not solely of that reason). @ItBFY: Unidentified ship, you have thirty seconds to make your way out of this system. - Almost every part of space belongs to somebody and the exceptions are contested space (-warzone). Justified, most of the time. My say on RP. - aerelm - 02-09-2011 A serious question from the OP: - Whats your definition of RP?
Answer this, so I can continue with my side of the story. |
