Battleship terror - Igiss - 07-15-2005

There were reports from several people that two guys with battleships threaten peace and tranquillity on our server. I guess you all know who they are. I don't know how many times they exactly killed other players, but their next unmotivated killing will be their last. Take screenshots if you are shot at by something large and clumsy. As several people told me that they will quit playing at Discovery if this will continue, I will be forced to take actions - ban.

Again - Discovery is a peaceful place, I haven't allowed PvP to make someone who has a larger ship to enforce his own rules. Rather PvP was allowed to make equal duels etc. possible.

I suppose they're talking about me and my friend. So far we've killed one person (level 50, Large Train), and have threatened two other people (level 60). We thought PvP was allowed as long as the person you're attacking is in a capital freighter, and over level 25. We never knew that unmotivated killing wasn't allowed.

Double post, sorry.

Hey, don't worry about me, I don't mind an evil crazy mad nutter in a battleship having a shot at me. All part of the game.

Random unmotivated killings will get you a bad name on this board, though. I suggest you declare piracy here if you want to kill players and name a price for you to leave them alone, or something like that.

While on the subject Denier, did you see any cargo dropped by your poor victim?

Battleship terror - Denier-of-Soup - 07-15-2005

I never checked the wreckage for cargo, I don't think there was any. I would declare piracy if it allows me to kill people above the minimum PvP requirements though. And of course, I will not bully them to the extent that they leave the server.

Battleship terror - Wrath - 07-16-2005

I fly something large and clumsy, but I was firing on a large cargo train competitor who as a matter of fact followed me to steal my trade secrets....

I will forever more open fire on him assuming he's still in a pvp enabled vessel....

I don't have a battleship, but it does hurt to be on the wrong end :P

Battleship terror - Igiss - 07-16-2005

All this makes me think about enforcing even more strict PvP rules for gunboats, cruisers and battleships. And make Titan the best ship available for piracy. Titan/Eagle/Sabre class ships are enough to kill large transports. No?

Battleship terror - Wrath - 07-16-2005

Actually no... they probably dont.

8k shield with a 30k hull in a fighter really takes a while to kill.

if they want to quit out you won't ever kill them, even with sunslayer torpedos which truth be told dont begin to match battleship weapons....

Even in a ship that can drop a large transport in about 8 seconds can't kill a dropper.

As is the rules really sound pretty fair.... only people who have lots of wealth are open for attack. If the rules are too strict what's the point of having a gunboat, battleship, etc.? Just make sure no one abuses their power and make an example of those who do.

The best pirate vessel will be that which maximizes firepower with enough holds to steal enemy cargo.

I'd have to encourage sticking to the original PvP rules, as they were drafted back when the server became active. Strictly banning any sort of unsolicited fighting removes a huge part of the functional social environment here. Troughout all of history, wherever there are traders there are pirates to counterbalance them. Obviously it's rediculously unbalanced to have liberty dreadnaughts chasing Rhinos all over the system, and seriously a waste of time for all involved anyway. But if a trader feels like dropping 11 MILLION dollars on a gigantic cargo train and drag millions more worth of diamonds through open space, then they have to be prepared to deal with the possibility of a pirate attack. This encourages intelligent piloting, plotting less known courses, and general awareness. All of which improve the play experiance. If capital ship PvP is removed from the equation, you're just going to have a server entirely full of level 90 people in trains mindlessly floating through space between planets. Not to sound extremist here, but in light of the recent threats by people to leave the server if they encounter the remotest possibility of danger or a challange..... I have to say, i don't think i'd stick around on a server where nothing remotely exciting is allowed to happen. The proposed changes would effectively change what used to be a thrilling space combat/trading game into a cross country trucking simulator.

/to head off any arguments against my percieved "power hungry" nature before they're made... it should be known that i've never even owned a capital ship aside from the one on my private testing server. I've been making my money on this server through a combination of trading (in something a bit less obtrusive and underdefented than a 400 meter long packing crate mind you) and flying corsair missions in an eagle. I DO however, intend to purchase a battleship when i can afford one. When that happens i also expect to be able to use it to it's fullest extent...

Battleship terror - xit - 07-16-2005

I say keep the current PvP rules, they seem fair.

Besides if somebody doesn't like PvP this is probably the wrong sort of server to be in, there are after all servers that doesn't allow such things. :P

Anyhoo, I've had no trouble so far. Have had one challenge to a PvP so far, but declined and that was that. Mind you I was only flying a Humpback (still is ), and to be frank it sucks as a figther. :P
