There are light fighters, heavy fighters, and Super heavy fighters. Almost everyone I see flying a fighters is in a super heavy. Now I know that some skilled people can fly the lighter fighters and be successful but put them in a super and they are better. Does anyone actually do better in the lighter models? Maybe some ships should move forward at different speeds than others?

VHF are more multitask vessels which is why they are used often

LF are more anti bomber or intercept ships.

Fighters - Enojado - 02-28-2011

HFs are good for dying against VHFs, except the considerably smaller models maybe...

Light fighters are nice and used often enough.

I would assume three are people out there who are skilled in LFs, yes. In LFs, tactics are a bit different from VHFs and SHFs, though. Lots of dodging, hit-and-run, and if you know how to place mines properly, you can do pretty well in one. They're also pretty good at taking out the slower VHFs and Bombers, too, since an LF can stay behind the enemy the entire time due to its faster turning speed.

As for going forward at different speeds, in the next update, I hear that both LFs and possibly Freighters are getting a boost in cruise speed to about 400m/s. Not much use for combat purposes, but it's happening.

oh great that means more pirates looting traders

Fighters - AeternusDoleo - 03-17-2011

Only traders silly enough not to bring escorts. One VHF ought to do it. Except against those Correos maybe...

Heck, transport turrets might actually be effective against freighters:D

I shot a barge from 100% with b/b to 15% hull in a LF
then some GB blew it up.

Only took me 45mins:crazy:

LF's do some damage it seems?

HF's should be something like the gladiator. 4 guns razor+cd.

I made that proposal for the BHG Barracuda.

As to the OP, I tend to do better against the really, really skilled pilots in LFs than I do in VHFs, though I've only had a few fights with a few people to base that on. Still, this is because LFs have the rather nice ability to get out of any situation imaginable, and be completely unhittable should they choose.

So while VHFs are generally better combat ships, 5 LFs will almost always beat 5 VHFs if the pilots have a similar skill level, because 4 VHFs trying to lock down a LF will have little success if the pilot is decent, whereas VHFs are somewhat easier to hit and cannot run nearly as effectively from 4 LFs.

LFs are generally better group fighters IMO, they fare best in large numbers, swarming the enemy that can't hit them.
