Mock me if you want. But only discovery will work on my computer.
I installed crossfire which would start up, then minimize, then give me a generic failure message
I downloaded freeworlds, which works, but there are no servers Q_Q
I downloaded and installed the battlestar galacitca mod, which told me that my graphics card wasn't compatible.
So I am stuck with 6 molly characters on discovery

Give Plasmafire and 88Flak a try, they're pretty unique and awesome mods.
Do a clean reinstall of Freelancer then try activating mods again.

I wouldn't bother with Crossfire if I were you.
For Freeworlds, it sounds like you did not start it up with the correct IP or didn't configure your GLS settings. Haven't played that in ages though, so maybe I'm wrong.
Can't say I know much about Plasmafire, but '88Flak is pretty cool.
