Gunboat Fighting Technique? - James.Caan - 03-07-2011

Hi Guys,

I've not had much to do with gunboats before, but I've recently started a BHG char and have just equipped him with an Orca GB loaded with BHG GB turrets. What's the best approach to combat with this setup for newbie?

Any advice most welcome! :)

Chainfire them at others.

If you become the hunted rather than the hunter pick a point you want to run to, fly in that direction, fire backwards while strafing and thrusting to your target.

It's also a good idea to swap the BHG turrets for Basics as they draw much less energy and you can literally fire them forever.
Against larger targets, learn tu hit with your forward gun and you won't need any Battlerazor or Pulses.

Orca ain't really a good GB for that matter.
Its a hard thing to fly.

Not to small,
Not to agile,
Not that much armor,
Not a strong Forward Cannon,

I used to fly it guns only but since I had enemies who come with groups guns only wasn't really useful for me,
They chase you their shields go down and they turn away to recharge it while the others keep shooting at ya.

Although snac bombers can be fend of by guns only since they need to get close because of all the strafing.
Firing in rear view is the best solution for guns only.
However the Basics isn't really imo better.
Sometimes you need to turn of have short moments you can't fire.
This gives your core enough time to recharge.

I prefer 3x razor, 2x pulse, 1x missile on my Orca.
It imo be a pretty razor boat.
You just needs jousting targets.
And its also good against capitals.

Try different setups for your own.
Since most people have their own unique fighting style.

The most effective way to make GBs work against groups of snubs is to team up with another GB sporting full primaries and to cover each other, hence you shoot the guys shooting your buddy and vice versa, meaning you are dishing out damage and make the enemies dodge more than they actually shoot at the same time.
When you are alone and are up against 3 snubs who know what they are doing, you are usually screwed either way, most GBs can even be killed with 2 moderately skilled VHF pilots.
If you want to survive in group fights in a gunboat, teamwork is the way to go.

Orca isn't good gb, really it is the worst gb that I have ever piloted. Try to compare this gb with liberty gb. Liberty gb has same amount of guns firing forward and backward and orca has lower armor and less maneuverability than Libby gb. Try to fight on it in Connie.

About tactic. If you have quite enough armor and firepower use primaries and all time strafe, cause it will help you to dodge against shots. And your purpose to fire to enemy all time without missing, cause if you will do only few shots, you will not win a fight against other gbs.

If you don't have enough armor and firepower ( bottlenose ) use pulses/razors setup and always turn/strafe. You main purpose fast head to head flight, few shots and then fastly go out from enemy gb's guns radius ( if he use primaries). Then again.

Those tips was against other gbs. If you are fighting against a bomber, usually it is quite easy to win. If against a couple of them, prepare to die, if they aren't noobs.

And against fighters it's real to kill a couple of them, but not more

Box + aim = work. In case you don't want to aim, chainfire. In case you're being hunted, try to sneak in behind and wait until one begins a turn. Then you deliver a heavy punch of chainfiring. There are also gunboats who like to stay on one place. Use mines against them.

Yeah, and 2 debs + 1 deb turret rocks [Image: emoticon-0178-rock.gif]

best gunboat tactic: buy a solaris osiris.

Well, I personally don't like primary turret fighting so my suggestion would be to switch to 2 pulse/3 razor combo and a missile. Considering the overall shape of the Orca is really similar to the Hachiman, which I fly, I'm pretty sure it will work wonders much as my ship does.
Vs fighters and bombers, get em with the pulse count one second and the fire all three of your razors at them. If they didn't disintegrate at that point, rinse and repeat and keep them busy with a missile or two in the mean time. Vs other gunboats, don't follow them, strafe at a distance and use pulses until you can force a joust, during which you fire all you've got when they're right on you, then hold v (rearfire) and poke them with a pulse or two as you turn.

If you really want to stay as a turret guy, learn to rear fire while turning slightly and you'll be golden. (Start turning a bit with the mouse, hold V, turn the other way slightly, hold V, etc.)
