New to freelancer, new to server. - Emeraldhill - 04-06-2011

Hey all, I finally decided to get freelancer and try it out. I joined this server due to it being the most active (surprised at how many players there are) and ... well here I am.

The game seems quite difficult to get into, I watched the video tutorial but there doesn't seem to be any helium in that cloud by where I spawn, only pirates.

I'm also quite confused on how the game works. It seems I'd have to do quite a lot of grinding but the game isn't a MMORPG right? I thought I'd pick a ship and have some fun.

How long will it takes to get a good (I know good is relative) ship and stop being lunch for pirates?

First welcome to the server! Next you will want to read and check out the server rules to avoid a lot of problems.

Now you may try using the /restart command.. Try typing /restart Liberty.. and this will give you a CSV with better weapons than the starflea you start with. Good luck!

Helium ain't there either due to the mining system update.

When you see an Angel tagged player in game you can ask them every question you have,
since their purpose is to help newbies.

Best is to start trading a bit, haul some goods

You'll always be a pirate lunch though. When you trade that is.
Unless you are experienced enough to find your way around pirates.

Fighting comes with experience in Freelancer,
You need to train yourself a lot to get into the pvp'ing.

For additional information you can look here: www.discoveryfl.com/wiki

Tip 1: Trade first earn some money, then make a second character to shoot with.
Tip 2: Don't care to much when you die, it's still only a game.
Tip 3: Bigger ship do not always mean better in the Freelancer Discovery mod, but you'll find that out sooner or later.

Edit: Oh and if you like big battles?

Have fun on the server!

See ya in space.

It's good to see that new players not only play on the server, but also join the forums! Welcome!

At first, some basic informations if you haven't already seen them:
Discovery Rules (always better to link that ^^)

Quote:The game seems quite difficult to get into, I watched the video tutorial but there doesn't seem to be any helium in that cloud by where I spawn, only pirates.
The mining is different than in vanilla Freelancer. As I don't do much mining, I can only guess how it's done now ^^ but I think there are a lot of people who know that!

I tell you this as a trader:
There is no good ship which stops you being lunched ^^
However, you can minimize the amount of successful pirate attempts. But first, you probably want to get a decent freighter to make your first money. If you need a small amount of startup credits (I think 100,000 to 1 million might be okay, but I don't know how generous the others are ^^), don't hesitate to ask!
Oh, and the server commands are always worth a look;)

Oh, and don't worry, if you give yourself enough time you will learn everything you need to learn here! :)

Well, seems like you already have quite some help here ^^
