Ohnoez! I missed event - Kreuzritter - 05-16-2011

Gday to you out there,

I noticed that quite a few people get confused with calculating when an event that has been announced in server time is taking place in their timezone. Soooo, here we go:

1. Server time

What is that fancy server time thingy?

Quite easy to answer: Server time is equal to GMT/UTC +0

2. And what now?

Now that you know what timezone the server runs in, you need to know what timezone you are in. Easiest way to do so is doing a google search with "Your Region" and "timezone".

So lets assume you are in GMT+1 and the event you want to participate in takes place at 18:00.
Seems to be fairly easy, eh? Just adding/distracting that number behind the GMT to the server time.
Wrong
Keep in mind that GMT/UTC has no daylight saving, so for our example that means:
18:00 server time is 19:00 GMT+1 during winter time and 20:00 GMT+1 during summer time.

3. Cool, but I am lazy you know?

No problem, just consult this page:
Time Calculator
Pretty self explanatory, even though it is in german. First time and date is the one of your PC, the second one is GMT/UTC and for the third one you can pick a place to see
what time it is there at the moment [the box you can check indicates if there is summer time (checked) or winter time (unchecked)].

4. And without teh internetz?

If you are lazy AND not able to check online for whatever reasons, you can add a second clock to windows.
To do this:

1. Click on your clock
2. A calendar and an analog clock should pop up, under them something written about settings, click that
3. A new window pops up, navigate to "additional clocks"
4. Check the "show this clock" box and select (GMT/UTC) Coordinated Universal Time
5. Press OK

Whenever you click on your clock in Windows now, there is a new clock running in server time next to you old one.
Begone are the times of cheap excuses for not being present at events!

Or just log in, do /time and calculate the difference between server time and yours.

Nice job and all, but really, it's easier to open a clock at the internet set it to GMT and just look at the differences... or think how much time more you need to wait etc etc.

I think the problem is not server time, it's other time zone names like BST and so on!
For example:

Time: Starting at 18:00 BST onwards.
Location: Spazzydragon's event server.
Areas of operation: Southern Omega systems.
[...]
Would YOU know what time that is in GMT?

Ohnoez! I missed event - Kreuzritter - 05-16-2011

The computer clock thingy works on Win7 and Vista.

BST = British Summer Time = UTC/GMT +1

And yes, there are many ways to do this and everyone has his own method he likes best.
I just wanted to provide some information for new players and people who may not know where to look....and to do something "useful" while sitting in boring class:)
