"...Understand, it's not that I don't believe in the law, just that I dont believe the law is flawless. People run the government, therefore the government, or any organization for that matter, is going to be corrupt by its very nature. Who's to say which laws are good and which ones are bad, or which organization or government's laws are more right? There's no basis to judge them by other than each individual's beliefs and values.
So don't get me wrong, I support the law, or the idea of it. I will continue to support it so long as I and it stand for the same thing. When the law comes to stand for that which I despise, I will fight it. And I will continue to fight it so long as it stands for what I despise.
I was raised on Los Angeles. You ever been there? *A nod on my part* Just the spaceport and the bar right? *Another nod* Yeah, that's the nice part. You dont just walk around the streets there alone or unarmed. It isn't safe. I grew up in the middle class. Believing firmly in the law, in authority, in a dark line between right and wrong. It wasn't till I hit 16, when my mom lost her job and got sick, that I saw everyone else's point of view. That dark line gets grayer and grayer the more desperate you get. Stealing and robbing dont seem so wrong when they're the only way to keep you and your mother alive. I didn't always have to, but there were those times...
I still believe in right and wrong though. I'll continue to hold my ideals highly till the day I die, whether that be tomorrow or years from now. I had to think hard about what I believed in, but I haven't lost it.
*He stares thoughtfully at the table for a minute, sipping his drink.*
They're not all bad, you know? Some of them believe what they're doing is right. Maybe years of flight, of hiding and fighting, have messed with their heads a bit. They're not all out the rape pillage and destroy, usually only one of the three. I can understand how what they do could seem, to them, to be justified.
Granted, there ARE bad ones. But they're not limited to that side of the law. Every few months you hear about some scandal in the Senate. Our side of the law isn't so much better really.
In the end, neither side is right, no side is right. Why do I work for the law then? You ask. I won't blame them for their actions, I'm sure they're perfectly justified in their own minds. That said, I love, not so much my nation, but the people in it, the people on Los Angeles and others like them. And while I may not blame them, the criminals will, in their fight, hurt those people, and I can't let that happen."
He checks his watch, downs the rest of his drink and gets up.
"As enlightening as this has been, I do have other places I've got to be. Good luck with that article, throw me a wave when it comes out."
I watch him leave, thinking hard about what he's said. This was *supposed* to be an easy write, a break from the high profile political stuff I've been doing. Not so much, much to my chagrin.
