Technological Advancement - Shaka - 07-02-2011 Right now, it's 817 A.S. and 4.86 will bring us 818 A.S. That's edging on 20 years since the sp campaign which was what - 800/801. So here's my question: given this extended length of time, might we consider updating vanilla models? *cower* It seems to me that in 20 years, most modern militaries and corporations would have replaced their frontline equipment. I'd like to think that the major sirian powers and corporations would also continue to improve the equipment they use. Really, I just see this as an excuse to add/replace higher quality models into vanilla factions. Every time I read the forums, I see modellers creating ships that are in many ways exceeding the quality of vanilla ships. As a way of making vanilla ships just as visually pleasing as mod ships, I thought that the pretext of (in-RP) newer models could be used to replace and update (ship) models. Arguably, the ships added by the mod already fulfill this role, i.e valkryie->wraith, dagger->scimitar, but there is no actual difference in the models. A drastic proposal I know, and one that might not be the best given the load that already exists to create new material, but something that I thought was interesting. I realize that many of these difficulties exist, so rather than feasibility, I'm more interested in what people think of the idea itself. Thoughts? In your example, I would want to make the liberator a new model (you know, what it looks like). This kills two birds with one stone by updating something 20 years old in RP and almost 10 in ooRP. Technological Advancement - ZxO - 07-02-2011 well some ships have this "upgrade" lilke the Decurion that Replaces the Legionary. and we still need the old Models in game for the history feeling ! let all vanilla ships in game and put new models for theyr advanced versions that are allready in game like Griffin advanced Hawk Hussar Advanced Cavalier Hyena Advanced Bloodhound and so on the Corsairs can Intodruce the M15 TitaniumCrusher that i modelled for the Void:D Technological Advancement - Hielor - 07-02-2011 ' Wrote:It seems to me that in 20 years, most modern militaries and corporations would have replaced their frontline equipment. Unfortunately, there are more pressing priorities, like replacing those bloody awful Homeworld imports. Yeah, but compare an early F-16, to the current versions that are serving now. A lot has changed. Technological Advancement - Jinx - 07-03-2011 cosmetics is one thing - and also part of the balance... real advancement is another. in contrast to the real world - this is a pvp enviroment. in the real world - every side will TRY HARD to gain the upper hand - and no one will blame the balance when US M1 tanks roam the desert where the other side tries to put them down with ww2 RPGs. but if we have - lets say... the rogues fly in 60s jets, like http://www.aviation.ru/MiG/15/MiG-15.jpg and give the liberty navy stuff like this http://wiki.ksso.ch/mediawiki/images/9/95/F_35_ctol.jpg - the playerbase would complain hard and blame "the balance devs" so we can only let everyone advance. there is also something like a high tech stagnation. - once you reached the pinnacle of your technology in terms of physical laws, you ll need a real breakthrough. freelancer ships can already: - cheaply use particle, plasma, laser etc. cannons that appear to be more powerful than even a neutron star at closest vicinity - have cheap antigrav drives - allowing them atmospheric flight - even the smallest ship comes with a cruise drive - the big ships hurl antimatter causing shockwaves as large as moons - bombers come with a cannon that is more poweful than shooting a black hole how much further can you really go but yes - we can apply logical advancements to factions ( FTL drives, cloaking ) - leaves the question .... does the other side ( the side that was not given that stuff ) enjoy the game just the same? |
