Clever things to do to help ooc's become RP's - Angelfire - 03-12-2008 After reading some of these amazing posts on the OOC/RP wars I thought why not have a positive tips ONLY thread for ways to help the new fellas get the hang of RP... I understand that most noobies don't come to these forums, so why not post good ideas here to help us help them. Although it is the Admins job to police the policies of the server, you can help immensely by being a mature, positive voice in the game. Freaking out and insulting people with names like Capwhore etc. does not work at all! cool.. I'll go first.. Try not to moan in: //nag nag nag.. - it defeats the object. Rather do the old: 'mm.. strange, a farmers alliance ship in New York!' Then maybe: 'Farmers alliance! Those fellows are Kusari sabouteurs! GET HIM!' If he nags you in system chat, PM him... and be as polite as possible: 'Excuse me sir, I apologise for the inconvenience but are you aware that this is a Role Play server?' If he replies 'F**k u N00b Iz pwn U!' Then take a screenshot and continue your conversation with: 'My apologies, I did not mean to offend you, but this is not a PVP server, all combat here is based on roleplay.' cool.. i look forward to more advice from the geniuses of disco... POSITIVE STUFF ONLY!
(there are more than enough threads burning with the vomit of the flamers!)
Clever things to do to help ooc's become RP's - Zapp - 03-12-2008 Correction, I'm pretty sure the PVP server was shut down. I think. Unless it got turned back on. And yeah. Best way is to point the new guys to the server, and tell them to read the rules. Either that, or have the console messages loop through the rules, though it might take awhile to get them all in there. Clever things to do to help ooc's become RP's - Angelfire - 03-12-2008 ok cool.. sorry about that, i edited it. :) Clever things to do to help ooc's become RP's - Zapp - 03-12-2008 If they insist on being anything but a PVP whore, DON'T PLAY WITH THEM. Just ignore 'em, and they'll go away. They may even stop their erroneous ways and play it our way, since it's our server, not their's. Clever things to do to help ooc's become RP's - Angelfire - 03-12-2008 The 'don't play with em' philosophy is fine to a certain extent, but not so cool when you see them attacking someone or you for that matter. A kind word is a very powerful thing.. there is no defense to kindness. My point here is that we can be proactive instead of reactive in dealing with these things. It's great practice for real life conflict resolution too! heh heh Clever things to do to help ooc's become RP's - Laowai - 03-12-2008 I have a few ways i deal with ooc..... Firstly, i let it slide.. perhaps its just a one off.. or someone needed to say something quickly without scrolling through 150 names to find the one they wanted... fair enough.... The second way is to remain in character ALL[u] the time until they use the "//" disclaimer... so one guy says: "I don't think i have enough RAM to run this" - And i answer - "What kind of captain tries to run their vessel with male sheep?" etc etc - you get the drift. I also do this with the really obviously new players in a system who are trying to find out about the game, and what faction they want to be in.... I'm a softy to new players, i will help them out and give them money if i see they are trying - but i will try to do even this IN CHARACTER - after a while... they get the drift of the point you're trying to make. i.e we Role play here, not PVP. Thirdly, i will occasionally PM the PVP offenders, who just want to come here and PVP. I let them know about the server as nicely as possible, explaining that PVP with no RP will just end up getting them eventually not liked and possibly banned... you would be surprised (or perhaps won't be) by how many times i get the "really??!" reponse to that info. The other thing is, i always steadfastly refuse ANY Duel or PVP offer from anyone that i think is new, OR not someone i know is a Role player - (my pvp sucks anyway so i avoid getting pwned). This discourages them... whats the point of trying to PVP if no one will do it? I also remain in Character when i say this when i can... i.e. A: "you wanna PVP?" B: "Do i want to what? what's a PVP, or.. are you calling me a player? I would never cheat on my wife...?" stuff like that.... Clever things to do to help ooc's become RP's - marauder - 03-12-2008 I kept trying to ask a guy called 'Tom' why outcasts sold one of their bombers to the police tagged freelancer (his ID), got ignored through the whole thing. Even the line 'outcasts would space you outta the nearest airlock' didn't get me a reply, pity, cos it could have been either really funny or some good RP. Bummer really. Earlier in new tokyo some strangely named guy gave the TBH gunboat, who had been chasing him, a 'l33t' you lost sucker! line. Me and the TBH guy started a little chat in system about what kinda drugs and/or brain damage the guy had to come out with such gibberish. Clever things to do to help ooc's become RP's - MB52 - 03-12-2008 When I get the l33t chat, or LOL, or =p, etc... I make a comment like "Excuse me Mr. X, but it seems your comm system is malfunctioning, it just made a lOOOOOOOOOl type of noise.. very strange I hear its a problem with those cheap aftermarket comm systems, you may want to get it looked at." Clever things to do to help ooc's become RP's - cgaWolf - 03-12-2008 "It seems your ID system is broken, you might want to fix that" (overlevelled players on civ IDs) Clever things to do to help ooc's become RP's - sovereign - 03-12-2008 There's quite a few ways to inform people of civvy ID issues. Today I had a few minutes spare while the firewall went down for maintenance, and as I was going along I noticed someone overleveled. I mentioned in PMs that they had a mighty fine ship for being a civilian, and that they'd do better employed by people. I wasn't terribly surprised that I eventually had to outright say it OOC (he still had the rules handouts in his hold, and was flying a Raven's Talon assault fighter fully equipped...), but he seemed to have learned he didn't need to use OOC to accomplish things. All in a day's work. *pats self on back* |
