A Zoner Gunboat - MB52 - 03-20-2008
Ok, while Jinx has made a remarkable Gunboat that the Zoners might be able to use in the next version of the mod.. I'm stuck right now figuring out what kind of gunboat would be best for a zoner.
At this time, I have a Talarca cruiser for my zoner explorer, but it seems to be a bit much, and I want to downgrade to a gunboat sized ship. (It does need to be combat capable, to help defend the freeports from Keepers/harvesters..)
First of all, I don't realy like the Kusari explorer design, it doesn't seem to fit..., nor do I realy like the spacial, so the 2 explorers are automatically out...
Another option may be the IMG gunboat, I"ll have to find where its sold and check it out...
The other, is a Lanehacker gunboat. While it may be sketchy getting a RP reason for the Hackers to have sold one to a zoner, it could fit. It being a relatively advanced ship, would be perfect for exploring... (and it looks pretty cool to boot!) But what kind of problems would be caused by using such a ship?
Are there any other nice options? I think I want to avoid the house military Gunboats, for obvious reasons...

The AW (a more violent group of Zoners than most ) tend to use the rogue gb simply because its rather genaric and old and they would be likely to sell it to a friendly zoner.

your closest choice for a gunboat is the IMG gunboat. IMG is friendly to zoners - and they share a similar dislike for the inner sphere. the gunboat is somewhat "civilian", too.
imo, rogues and hackers gunboats is no good choice. - the rogue gunboat is supposed to be rubbish - and the hackers gb won t be sold to zoners. - corsairs wouldn t sell their gunboat to zoners either.
core house militaries may sell their "old" ones to zoners - but then, zoners with their distinct dislike for the core houses will more probably not buy them. ( but out of all military equipment - rheinland appears closest to sell them one, there appears to be a good relation between zoners and rheinland, - a lot of zoner designs sold in rheinland.. but the current RM faction does not reflect that much. )

Dis flies an IMG Pancake.. no raised eyebrows.
Shamus flew a Kushan Freighter for awhile. Mini-gunboat in itself.
Linus got a deal on a Lib GB.. It's kinda odd to see, but Linus is odd, anyway.
The TAZ also have a Talarca flying about. May be a bit of overkill, but until we put "First Thought Giver of Will" back in his can, it seems a necessity...
Nix on the pirate/unlawful stuff.

Hmm thanks for the replies, its appreciated. I may switch to the IMG gunboat, haven't decided yet, I don't really think its looks work well for Zoners though, we'll see. For now I guess I'll keep the Talarca.

well, when its about the "looks" only, - i think the hackers gunship fits the role well. with its smooth shape and its emphasis on form before function - its small size and its all in all "civilian" look. - but then it comes from one of the very much aggressive and militaristic factions that do have little contact with zoners.
they operate in the very inner sphere only, consider zoners hardly neutral - or rather targets to be pirated. - when its about roleplay, i wouldn t think it a good idea to choose it - but when its about the looks, it fits in neatly.
but i don t think the IMG gunboat is bad. it has a rather functional shape - but quite some detail from close up. at first, i didn t like it much. its general look was boring - but when you look closer, you find a lot of stuff thats worked out really nicely about it.
imo, its quite big and clumpsy, but then i don t like gunboats too much anyway.
postscript: i am waiting for the first "in-space" shots of my gunboat, once Doom has it converted and ready sort of. - i got no clue how the textures will fit and look with the coloured light and all. - so i m quite excited myself.

I've always been curious why the Kusari Explorer never comes up in these conversations.
It's just about the closest thing one can get to an actual civilian line Gunship, it looks like a grand home away from home and it can shoot ok too (for being a sort of small cruiser).

This is all true, and the reason I decided to ask first about it, was the problem with the lanehackers being not likely to sell one of their ships to an outsider. (even a neutral one, in fact I doubt they'd sell it to their allies)
All in all I can't wait for your gunboat, it just looks great, and the stats you chose seem perfect for a zoner gunboat.

The Rheinland Military (both PC and NPC factions) won't give Wraths to the police, I don't see them handing gunboats to outsiders. I wouldn't go for the military hardware, but I'm biased. I'll tell you this, I've stopped two Zoners (Zoner ID) the other day in Rheinland, one was in a RH Cruiser, the other in a GB. The encounter wasn't pretty (and I don't mean PvP, which actually didn't occur).
