Smuggler ID - Drake - 01-03-2012

Ok, there seem to have been some... Drastic changes to the Smuggler ID.

Freelancer Smuggler ID Wrote:1. Can trade and escort traders. Can smuggle and escort smugglers.
2. Can fire on other ships only in self-defense, or in defense of a ship being escorted.
3. Cannot use transports with more than 3500 cargo, except for the Pirate Train.
4. May be engaged by lawful factions while carrying any cargo.
Uhm.

So, is smuggling actually being separated from regular trading with rules now? For the longest time, smuggling was considered exactly the same as trading, and anyone who could trade could smuggle, even with IDs that said "cannot participate in unlawful actions". Has that changed? Because, looking at this ID, it seems very much pointless, and in fact it's just painting a GIANT target on your ship, no matter what you're flying or what you're carrying.

I've always felt that way too... I ran a Slaver ID for ever until the change, partly to be a smartiepants as if the Slave liner wasn't enough of a hint... partly to try to be legit. Now it seem it's all for not. I won't mention the cost lost. A mil is a mil... so there it is. Thoughts anyone?

I saw that too, I have two smugglers and am not sure exactly what it means.

Well, aside from the last sentence, I don't really have any problems with that ID.

The last sentence, though is kind of silly, though, if I am understanding it right. Why would having a generic ID suddenly make legal trading a punishable offense? I guess this might be typo or missprint, or maybe engaged was just a poorly chosen word.

Hmmm just my thoughts here, BUT maybe it is because of all the complaints in the past about "SMUGGLERS" yelling "I am just a trader officer, you just think i am a smuggler" crap. Now there is no faking it. You are a trader, or a smuggler plain and simple. Just like your a corsair, or outcast or any other non lawful.
Now you choose lawful or non lawful like everyone else.

Interesting because the house corp IDs no longer even say anything about unlawful acts anymore (other than a blanket prohibition on piracy). My IC ID certainly doesn't prohibit me from smuggling.

So it's not like I have to choose to be explicitly lawful, it's actually less black-and-white for the corp IDs.

Anybody know of *any* benefits to using the smuggler ID?

The rule used to be you couldn't harass someone with a Smuggler ID unless he was actually hauling contraband. The rule also used to be that ANY trader could haul contraband, even without a Smuggler ID. I'm wondering what the CURRENT rules are. If they haven't changed, then the Smuggler ID went from mostly pointless (like it used to be) to actively detrimental.

Just a spontaneous brainfart: Maybe give the PTrain 395 cruise to make it worth using it?

I do not think so. I find it is now more of a RP ID. For those who seriously want to RP a smuggler, and not just Power smuggle.
It is like all those flying with generic Pirate IDs/Freelancer tags and claiming they are freelancers not pirates. It is an excuse to pirate 1 minute, and pretend to be lawful next.
This is why my LSF ships blow up all Lawfull IDs with contraband, but only fine a smuggler ID player. I find those with Smuggler IDs to be more into RP.
