Espionage and "RP Flags" - Ingenious - 01-12-2012 Please hear me out, I'm not trolling. Forum roleplay is limiting in that two parties can always commune securely without any risk of outsiders picking up on it. This is useful for avoiding metagaming or holywars. However, this can be inhibiting, since you can't get anyone else tangled up in your interaction, intentionally or not. I suggest that there be some sort of standard way of denoting an action in an otherwise secure roleplay encounter which would be visible by a third party. For example, you're meeting with criminals in a bar, but you decide to enter the bar ostentatiously instead of entering normally. One could call it a "red herring" or, if you will, an "rp flag." While these flags in otherwise private interactions might seem to disadvantage whoever drops them, they can also be used to one's advantage. A freelancer being extorted by criminals could agree to meet them in a bar then drop an rp flag to police, who can then enter the scenario. What do you think? Not sure if red text or another way would be best for a standard RP Flag. Espionage and "RP Flags" - Zelot - 01-12-2012 I think I get what you mean, but I am not sure how it would be implemented in sure a way that people who are new to the forums would know what is going on or what to look for. Espionage and "RP Flags" - DarthBindo - 01-12-2012 I always conduct all roleplay of that sort in bar and pub threads specifically to allow others to join in. But they never do :| Espionage and "RP Flags" - Pinko - 01-12-2012 ' Wrote:I always conduct all roleplay of that sort in bar and pub threads specifically to allow others to join in. Mostly because it's against the rules. Espionage and "RP Flags" - Markus_Janus - 01-12-2012 If anyone feels the need or want to cut into another persons comm channel for RP purposes, it is not to hard to shoot them a PM or skype message asking for permission. That should fulfill all rule requirements. ' Wrote:I always conduct all roleplay of that sort in bar and pub threads specifically to allow others to join in.If it's public from the start, that's different than if it's private and parties are added. I rarely use these pub/bar threads. They're more like fanfiction land than a place for legitimate RP to take place, from what I have seen. I think it'd be interesting to have an inRP way of dropping a public signal for other parties to enter an interaction, instead of forcing the other parties to have to ask OORP if they want to get involved. And some threads just aren't meant to be spied upon with an advanced network of satellites, pun intended. And could you please help me draw the line between fanfiction and RP here, since you seem aware of it. Espionage and "RP Flags" - Ingenious - 01-12-2012 ' Wrote:Put it in the subtitle. Perhaps you missed the essence of it—instead of specifying additional parties from the beginning, an rp interaction can take place in a somewhat public venue. Someone's apartment, a bar, a seaside park on Gran Canaria . . . and someone in the interaction does something noticeable, and marks it with an RP flag. And *bam*, from that point on, any party with a good reason and precedent to be in the venue can react to that RP flag in the interaction. You can't just barge in on a private conversation in someone's apartment, of course. You could mark a transfer of state secrets with an RP Flag and then a BDM operative or whatever could react to that information. |
