However, I found no hint at all of a plot--it was just an open singleplayer universe. That didn't really do it for me.

Cool game, but very bland looking.
Hielor, there is a contract-based campaign inside of the game, I haven't played much of it yet, though.
One of those 'This game would be perfect, but...' sort of deals.

Perhaps there is a modding capability to create our own worlds and systems...who knows.
The ability to create your own ships looks neat as.

For starters,you'll need a joystick to play.
And forget anything you know about piloting a ship from freelancer.....this one deals with real physics,laws of motion,etc.
Meaning,if you do a long thrust burn,it will take a complete flip around and another long thrust burn to slow you down.
And for combat...heheheheh....go ahead and try jousting...you'll be dead,or worse before you know it.
Get used to piloting the ship first....and pay close attention to your fuel gauge.
Played this one about a year ago...not too bad,but I hope they have improved it somewhat.

Looks interesting, has a couple of sweet features for sure.
..What happened to the visuals though? It looks pretty nasty. The textures look awful.

Your all insane.
-you can play with a mouse. the best fighters int he game use a trackball.
- you can build stations.
- nicer community MANY OF THEM FROM FREELANCER.
- the creator works on it nonstop the next exspansion to mercenaries is starting to look like infinity earth.
- Ive played them since arvoch the graphics are different but there way more option then vanilla freelancer whitch was the point of getting it long ago.
- thier servers are usually full. healthier community. vs say.. one 225 slot server that full half the day.
