Explosions - Corsair - 02-02-2012

Almost everybody has seen Mortars. They explode, make an extremely pretty explosion and fade away leaving sparkles behind. I've talked to several people who share my thought that Mortars of all sizes should create an area effect damage effect. This would create a 'death zone' for everybody in a battle, forcing battleships to maintain distance (I see so many just ramming into each other and blasting away) and making it harder for snubs and gunboats to hide. This would also make firing a mortar into a squadron an effective crowd control measure, as you have the chance of pulverizing the entire wing.

When capital ships explode, they make rather large explosions as well. Adding damage to that would be another 'anti-ramming' measure.

Good idea. That way a BS could just fire two mortars at a stationary asteroid and pulverize an entire wing.

I am to be supporting this.

I really doubt that creating 'zone of damage' for non-missile weapons is possible.
They could be always turned into non-guided missiles but that would make it possible to shoot them down with flaks..

I'm supporting this. People would be forced to pay more attention in taking positions in a battle.

This is already implemented.

I like the idea of mortar having radius of damage. But, as Helo said, I seriously doubt it can be implemented w/o turning it into a projectile weapon. And what Dusty said too.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic, but I'll just assume you aren't. And you're right, that's exactly what I'm thinking. Mortars ARE artillery, after all. If an entire fighter wing was flying that close to each other and didn't dodge the giant turquoise ball of death, they deserve to be popped.

Do note that for maximum damage to the direct target, the mortar should be a shaped charge of some sort, so the explosion should be a LOT weaker than the actual damage itself.

I too agree.
