Help for a newbie! - Trikky - 03-24-2006

Others may have had this and may be able to help me.

I got the latest Discovery Mod after seeing it on Lancers Reactor and decided to give it a try. And to say I was impressed is an understatement!

Being mainly a Single player...er.....player, I decided to give the online version a try as I didn't want to have to go through the whole SP campaign just to have open play.

Now to my problem...I'm having connection problems playing online...
I get the yellow connection icon on my screen pretty much all the time and I have REAL problems killing NPCs as they gazelle all over the screen. It can take anything like 10 mins to do a lvl 2 mission.

I have a 512 BB connection and it says I have a ping of around 50 when I connect to the server. I'm not downloading anything else in teh background and all my AV stuff is turned off.

If anyone has any suggestions or anything like that it would be great!

Thank you.

don't know what might b the prob but I got half ur speed, 150-200 ping and i have no lag until ping goes over 220 (or my father starts dloading from the other comp :( ), but since u mentioned, i played on another server with 50 - 70 ping time and i had the same prob as u... so, if anyone has an idea... I'd like 2 hear that too :)

OK the real questions are here

1. Do you have a router?

2. If yes to the above is it NAT compatible?

3. Do you know how to forward ports on it?

Nat compatiblity is the number one reason for lag such as the one you discribe (altho I say this from experiance on other online games, I'm new to Online freelancer myself)

If you can answer those questions maybe I can help you with them.

hmm, not sure how 2 answer, but i presume I do have a router somewhere in the network (wireless LAN, which is set up by the ISP) since I talked with the ISP about P2P giving me NAT issues sometimes and they said that I "won't get port forwarding", so, is there a solution without port forwarding?

Well actually port forwarding won't help much lag, after all you can get on the server already.. which means the port is not locked or closed anyway (altho it may be in stealth mode), use you the real problem is the NAT settings, most people don't even have their SSDP service running. So most peoples NAts are n ot even set up right.

So really IF you can get into the routers options you should be able to properly set up a nat and also set it up on the desktop too. Now where the port forwarding comes in is with certain router models (example some D-Link routers) you still need to forward some ports or set up a virtual server to allow to work proberly.

Stay with me... :P Thing to do is get me the make and model number of your router.. your ISP told you can't do any port forwarding? well unless the router is not in your home I have a feeling they were lieing (after all you told them about P2P and we all know ISPs hate that)

Get me the model number and make and I'll look into it.. same goes for you Trikky.

Yes I have a router, Yes I have both NAT and a firewall enabled....

not sure about SSDP.....But I'm willing to try anything....As long as it down't hurt too much!
I have access to port forwarding as I set mine up for P2P witrhout too much of a problem.

My router is a D-LINK DSL - 504T

Thank you for taking to the time to help!

can't get into the router options - no access :(

i'm following, lead the way  the thing is I can't, unless I find it (phisicaly) and look at the label :) and they didn't say it couldn't have port forwarding, just that they don't give me that unless I pay more
I figure the NAT problem appears when any1 else from the LAN (wireles or the other comp @ home) is using some bandwith as if downloading...

same thing above, might ask though :P

PS
looking at this reminded me of one of my favorite poems by E. A. Poe:

No front end or just no username/password?

Well I checked it out and your one doesn't suffer from the problem i was thinking of :( so no help there.

But I think maybe forwarding UDP ports 2300 to 2400 might still help, even tho the manual says that's only needed for the servers, the clients do use ports 2302 to 2304 (usually) to connect to the servers.
You'd do that in the advanced section of your routers web access page (192.168.1.1 for yours i think)

Yep thats the right IP....
I'll open the ports for Freelancer anyway....See if it makes any difference.

Thank you for the help.

**EDIT**

Ok.....Just been on....Still as bad.....

However....I believe I have found the problem....
Even though freelancer says that my ping was only 65 or so on the server list screen....I did a traceroute and a ping within a minute or so of loading up and the ping was in the high 700's and the traceroute came back with a packetloss of 50%

And that can only be a problem at my end (Or rather my ISP)

Looks like I will have to stick to SP..... :$
