What is my next step? - ChrisWade - 04-15-2008

I am currently flying a barracuda on a Civil ID.
I am level 29 and is closing in on my first 600k.

What should be my next step? I really want to start making the big bucks.
I'm thinking of getting a freighter from New Tokyo. It has almost the same fighter stats as my Barracuda, but a cargo hold of 245. Is that a good idea? Is 245 cargo-space enough to start making some serious money?

What do you say? Fellow travellers...

Serious bucks. I would count that as maybe 10 million per trade run, which is what the Advanced Train gets on the Diamond - Niubium run (19 or so both ways).

If you want to make big money, use a freighter. 245 cargo would get you a few hundred (200 or 300 or so) K per trade run (1 way that is) on the diamond run etc. You generally try advance up the shiplist.
I went Rhino -> Humpback -> Transport -> Train -> Advanced Train.
After working out some numbers, it would take you 16 or so hours to get 1.5 Billion in an Advanced train. Thats 8 days of maybe 2 hours a day. Would get you a battleship and some extras.
I worked it out for a Rhino as well. I think it was 28 or something days of 12 hours each day to get 1.5 Billion.

I advise the train method.

The Diamond-Niobium run takes about 18-19 minutes, and gets you 2307 credits profit per unit of cargo. That's about 11.535 million credits for a round trip in an advanced train. To get a battleship, you need about 800 million credits or so. That's about 23 hours of trading that route, if you don't consider pirates or the trade-in value of your trader ship.

Really really interesting!
A couple of questions... Advanced Train, is that a ship-class or what is it?
Where can I do the diamond - niubium run?

egards.

Advanced Train is a ship. Simple as that. You will see some NPCs flying them, though more likely just trains. They have 5000 cargo, the most in the mod. They do however, cost 120 million.

18-19 minutes? My run takes maybe 16 minutes in total and nets around 18 - 20 million total. Which route do you take?

Big bucks aren't necessarily always the biggest ships with the most money and biggest guns.

I, personally, have no capital ships, and I have say, after being asked to fly one by a family member once, that flying the biggest ships doesn't always mean having the most fun. If you want to fly a big ship with big guns though, continue along this method I quoted from the post above.

By continuing the way you are, you're in good shape to get a Falcon (from either Rheinland or Planet Kurile). This is really a great ship if you're under level 40, and if you want to keep being a fighter pilot it is a good progression. You can keep flying this Faclon until you get a million (not hard in Rheinland, I did it in a Legionnaire in Islay for a Centurion), and get a Light Fighter or the Marauder in the border worlds, and fly until you can afford a real Very Heavy Fighter (most likely the Viper, Stinger, or Eagle), and fly around as a Freelancer or Merc until you get know what is going on. Then you could go ahead and join up in a faction, or just work as an independent, or do whatever works best for you.

I, personally, like the second route better.

Just what I think, and sorry for the wall of text.

Edit: Oh, ya, and the diamond-niobium run isn't really all that great because of the pirate population it receives. I, personally, use it as my lifeblood in the AFA. Again, though, just my thoughts.

Ah, I used the Battleship as an example. He wanted to know how to make Big Bucks, so I told him.
Baconsoda, your way is more fun and probably better for RP but I personally prefer having the cash, and still buying the fighters etc. Currently saving to try get a transport again after I lost my account ID. Hope to get something good with the money eventually though.

I calculated from the time I was undocking from New Berlin with Diamonds, until the next time I undocked with Diamonds again. A full round-trip.

I don't use the tradelanes in Sigma-13, as that's inviting even more piracy. I cruise straight to the jump gate from the New Berlin jump hole. This is not recommended for those pilots only in freighters, but a transport's shields are more than able to handle the gas fields of Sigma-13.

Mind you, I'm talking about the New Berlin to New Tokyo run, and not the New Berlin to Kyoto run.

If you want to go the trading route, I would recommend taking boron from Manhattan to LD-14 in Leeds, and beryllium back to Newark from Stokes. Or, there's always light arms from planet New London to Gran Canaria and deuterium back. You don't make quite as much, but you won't be pirated anywhere near as often. I've done the NL->Gran Canaria run, and I have NEVER ONCE ENCOUNTERED A PIRATE. EVER. You may see some Hackers on the NY->Leeds one, though.

Bring business to Bretonia!

EDIT: Also, the run from New London to Gran Canaria is 5-6 minutes either way. And you need to get in quite good standing with the Bretonian Police. Or pain will ensue. Big pain.

There is the Alien Org from from Coftu or FP 9 to Cambridge Research.
It is rather short.

Id say 13-19 Minutes at best. Cambridge buys the Orgs for 1900 each.
And you can take Pharmesuticals back to the Corsair Base in Omega-5 and so forth.
