A question on intellegence organizations - kikatsu - 05-03-2012

This is mainly going to be about the LSF, BIS, the BDM, the ONI and the Kempeitai. Possibly the Order as well, as they fall into a similar category of intelligence organizations.

What I was wondering is how these groups compare and contrast with each other in terms of lore, methods, functionality, and actions. Unfortunately the actual workings of these groups are mostly secret, however the LSF is certainly the most developed so I have a decent idea of how they work... BDM is around as well, and the BIS is just getting off of their feet. Kempeitai is not around at all from what I can tell.

I guess what I am looking for is how their 'feeling' would be different depending on what group you are looking at. They all do covert missions and cloak and dagger work, but each has a kind of culture that I am looking into, and I think it would be good to drop a post in the general discussion area as I look around, see if the other players have things to contribute.

So far as I can tell, LSF does whatever LSF wants, which is operate like a second navy.

BDM has its cloak and shadows deals, check their message dump some pretty interesting things there. But they also have their 'Submarine' fleet that visits Liberty from time to time and partakes in their consumers.

I haven't really ever seen Kempeitai but from the little I have seen they operate sorta like secret police. And more openly as naval enforcers.

BIS is too new, looks similar to BDM though.

Well, I know the BDM once tried to bribe the Mollys with promises of support to denounce the IMG as the people responsible for the breaking of the Dublin Protocol in order to hurt their political image during the Omega-7 Affair.

Roleplay wise, Sina's Kempeitai (one of the many iterations that the faction had) was probably the one that truly gave the feel of a cloak and dagger intelligence faction. Deep strikes, collecting intel, making deals the whole schbang.

LSF imo, feels and acts like a second navy, nothing much there. Let's see if Johny turns the tables around.

BIS, as it is, makes shady deals, gets intelligence through the various connections that the Bretonian Government does have and don't. Kinda, doesn't mind they are dealing with scumbags, what it matters is the end game.

BDM, does some deep strikes against targets of oportunity.. and.. study the Wilde? I can't say much, since the only peeks i had on BDM was them attacking Liberty.
Probably did their share of shady deals, but nothing of note.

ONI is a ????

I appreciate the info so far.

And the ONI is the Gallic version of these organizations: http://discoverygc.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=111065

Order is mix of everything. Cloak & Dagger alongside overt operations, strikes across entire Sirius (and maybe Gallia included), fleet & inteligence at once. There are dealings with shady types & revolutionaires (Hackers, Dragons, Bundschuh) and often "whatever the cost" attitude.

I would say that you forgot MND on your list, but they're all Wilde anyway:D

As for BDM, they operated the U-Boat corps, and were pretty damned effective and striking deep into Liberty with it - for a time, no trader in liberty was safe.

Well, point taken but the other parties in Lolberty sometimes really force us to act that way.
But we're still trying not to show as a second Navy.

LSF acting as a second navy just doesn't feel right to me. Vanilla gave the impression they were a sort of Space FBI or Space CIA.

There are major issues with RPing intelligence organizations ingame in Freelancer and on Disco.

At it's core Freelancer is a shooter.

Real RPing of intelligence officers does not include much or any shooting of any kind. In addition, when the rare situation arises where there would be shooting all the players would be sanctioned because they would not be using LSF ID's, they'd be using Rheinland Military or Police ID's shooting Rheinland Military and Police ID'd people. Or they would be Daumann ID'd in GMG ships shooting at Samura ID'd Traders.

It's no Fault of the LSF, its how the game and disco are set up. Moreover, it is "Not" the fault of Disco or it's Admins or Devs. The actual PC game Freelancer just was not developed to be an intense text based RPG, which is really the only way to authentically RP an Intelligence Organization/Officer.

At the end of the day Freelancer is about Shooting or Trading. Every faction needs to do one or both on a daily basis or there would be no server activity.

Now some constructive thoughts.

For factions whose RP is very difficult to do ingame, give them "Forum Activity" minimums instead of "Ingame Activity" minimums.

Wouldn't solve the issue of "Why be in a faction that really doesnt do much ingame." but it might give an incentive for people who are really interested in RPing something like that.

Not to say there isn't stuff to do now and then or events to organize.

However, on a daily basis the ID system makes doing authentic "socially engaging" espionage activities by a =LSF= Named player, with an LSF ID, and a LSF IFF.......impractical. Honestly, a person like that irl would sit in an office cubicle 8-12 hours a day, analyze data, write reports, and then go home for the evening and play video games.

In essence espionage is metagaming.

I don't know.

I spent a lot of time in the =LSF= so when I read negative comments about them I get a bit reactive.

Hope some of this was beneficial.
