I've read about that some people have a shared access to some bigger ships or banks/armories.

Freelancer accounts are exported using Freelancer Account Manager into files or packages, and sent to the recipients, who import them using the same program and can log into the characters on that account in game.

Its possible useing Freelancer Account Manager.
The use is mostly for sharing faction cap ships when the leader is offline (Mostly the timezone different) since factions have ship limits.
EDIT: Dang Praetyre beat me! Oh also this is how some people have more then 5 ships.

Some factions not only use if for capitol vessels, the Jupiterguild has 1 shared account wich has for instance a fighter on it aswell for diplomatic duties
