Graphics Update - Leo - 06-17-2012

Over the past few weeks, I've been taking care of stuff in RL, but now that I'm stepping back into the fold again, I decided to take a small break from Discovery and check out some other mods out there. I wanted to see how the state of the Freelancer Community is since I quit modding and developing small tweaks and mods to Freelancer. That's not to say that I'm going to start modding again, but I noticed somethings in other games that made me think.

I know what you're thinking, no, I'm not talking about stealing ideas...simply upping the ante a little bit.

Jump Animation

The first thing I noticed is the jump sequence on Discovery is still...well...BLAND. It's always puzzled me as to why the jump sequence in Discovery is brighter than vanilla. Was that intentional or just a fluke that presented itself later on. Anyway, new beautiful jump sequences would be wonderful and would make the mod stand out a little more.

Cockpits

Ugh. This is a big one for me. The cockpits in Freelancer were never my thing. I was always in third person view because for me, it's easier to fight if I need to. However, it would be neat to jump inside my ships cockpit and see some lights and radar going.

UI Advancements/Sounds

I normally have the UI shrunk down and the sound off, but it would be neat to be able to have some new sounds and UI's. Maybe different UI's depending on the ship you're flying? Nomies could get some crazy blue UI, Rheinland's UI's would be green, etc.

Just some things that've been rattling around in my head since checking out other mods. What do you guys think?

You want new sounds? Get a sound mod (Hidamari's, for example).

Considering that the jump animation really isn't very important, I see no reason to update it.

New cockpits and UIs would be neat though.

I would love to have the UI be way smaller and less in the way than it is now ... Annoys me sooooo often...

[color=#FFFFFF]I have several WIP cockpits I did a while back but never got around finishing, mostly for caps

Once I settle down I might actually continue working

I agree with this, the same 3 cockpits are pretty rubbish. But for the love of god dont put in dials and readouts that dont DO anything! Its so STUPID in games when you go into a cockpit and see a bunch of dials that mean nothing, and are just supposed to provide effect, then have the UI and menu ect superimposed over THEM! Make the dials BE the UI/HUD or dont put them in.

Too small to be used as a cap ship cockpit, would work well for a snub though.
What's the purpose of the build tab? And the compass?

[color=#FFFFFF]Yeah well this will never be in game especially in a game with an essentially 13yo engine. Plus I'm pretty sure anything apart from the actual skin of the GUI is hard coded
