Increase base starting defense? - Tic - 06-25-2012 Well, I had a nice day today. After 5 hours of work, my completely legally constructed Kishiro base got destroyed by a lolwut Kusari lawful indie breaking the Kusari Legal Codex. Which made me think, why do bases have to be so defenseless at start? Do we really want a feature like base building be limited to groups who can spare a few ships to guard it and another few to trade like maniacs to get the shield up? I'm talking about regular bases here, some posted in plain sight, trading outposts, research stations etc. Since right now, the only way to build a base and let it survive is a) have 5 people guard it and another 5 trading like maniacs for 4-5 hours, b) hide the base where no one can find it, c) be lucky like hell so no one destroys it. Sure, some people don't mind this, but for me, a) I don't have so many people at my disposal, b) I don't want a base in the middle of nowhere, but somewhere where it would allow other people to have fun with it too, dock/buy tech/sell goods/repair etc, and c) only thing I can hope for. So, should base get some additional starting defense? My idea was this: After base is deployed, it can not be damaged by anything except Wear and Tear damage for 12 hours. That would give people enough time to at least get the basic defense(shield) in place, and it would prevent bored lolwuts to destroy other people's bases for no reason. Think of your new station as a freshly emerged hatchling, blinking dewy eyed at the world. Until a hawk swoops down and eats it. The initial construction period is a hive of activity - its Tue best time for lawfuls and unlawfuls to remove an illegal or undesired structure effectively. Your first priority should always be establishing a shield module, above all else. If you couldn't manage that in 5 hours, my personal suggestion would be to move the base somewhere out of the public eye. King's Cross was a mammoth task which involved tons of pre-planning and gathering valuable cargo in advance. That meant we could get the generator up ASAP. Hide the base also suggest the first thing wasn't read. Some people want to build a base to give fun to others, not just a private few. Hiding a base would negate this.
