Use old models for new opportunities - ssc - 06-28-2012

I had been thinking, looking at the old models of Discovery, why not take some of those models(if too big, down-size em abit) and use em for a faction that doesnt have a ship in that class or give it to civilian pilots.
Lets take the old Corvo model.

Simply replacing hardpoints with Gunboat and/or Transport weapons, change some stats and it would go well into the Discovery universe.
The old Hathor could also pass as another Civilian Transport or Gunship. And don't get me started on gunboats for Civilian pilots.

Looking back and then seeing what can be added with minimal work would add more for players to select from. Its not a bad idea, not perfect, but sensible when you think about it. Ive seen alot of posts for more Civilian ships. This could be a solution so no one complains about limit selection of ships.

That's not a terrible idea...An old corvo model "frigate" with a reduced powercore and GB guns might be interesting for civs.

The Hathor model is still kinda close to the new one, much closer then the new/old Corvo so it might be harder to use, but I'd love to see a non KusEx civilian GB.

I think you'll find a vast majority of old Disco models are terribly made, which is part of the reason why they were phased out.

old order gb was much nicer yeah BUT it was a mess poly wise.

when i was going to make a wreck version of it for the minor scrapfield i was shocked when i saw that s*load of misplaced and not needed polys.

if you wanna bring it back in fix it first and remove the ~40% of not needed polys.
(would be easier to make a new model i guess)

I personally much prefer the new Hathor model to the old one, speaking as someone who flies one. It's designed better and more interesting to look at, in my opinion, and the quality of the model is much higher.

It might be interesting to see some old models come back, but I'd much prefer that other things be addressed first, such as the import models that haven't been replaced yet.

There are some that need replacements, like the Pirate Transport, emblem of Liberty Rogues on the side can cause some conflicts in RP settings, such as a lone Pirate in Corsair space would be killed for the Rogue emblem, friends of the Outcasts. Currently, going through the images for the ships is hard, since many are either improved models and some havent changed. So coming up with the list, including the "Special ship" images, it gonna take some time. But its good to see some think that old models could be used again, just some re-texturing is needed.

Jinx. Don't be, he modeled whatever ships he liked instead of what was needed. Just about all the forktail models do - I can't tell you how much the unnecessary tails on the fearless (and to a much larger extent, my nephilim) piss me off. I don't even log them anymore they're so ugly, if they weren't necessary to my zonerzonerzoner storyline I'd sell them in a heartbeat.
