Both have same powercore.
Hatchet has 8 class-6 turrets and 1 class-7 heavy, while Thresher has 6 class-6 turrets and 2 class-7 heavies. The extra 2 light turrets on the Hatchet can be used for prims if you are willing to run out the core, or you can use them for support weapons such as pulses. Thresher cannot match the light turret output, however it does have the 2 heavies, unfortunately it can't really fire both of the class-7 mounts simultaneously (its possible but not common setup), so its an option to use one of those to hold a class-6 turret if you are willing to give up the slot.
Thresher can fire all of them backwards, while Hatchet cannot. This is very important if you are fighting something thats sucking on your exhaust.
The centered slots on the kudessie are easier to aim and snipe--I've sniped bombers with an LM before. The thresher slots are not bad, but the ship profile can block the weapons in some cases (such as firing while turning).
Hatchet feels more nimble, dunno if it is or not.

Thresher. Even last mod I'd have chosen Thresher over the Hatchet. It's really a very good dessie.

Hatchet got nerfed a lot in 4.86 Thresher is the best Dessie in the Mod now. Sadly some ships that were better then usual in next mod version get ubernerf-Sabre,Hatchet and some others that deserve a buff continue to suck- Scylla Storta etc.

Thresher is, and has always been the best balanced cruiser class vessel in the game...
Sure its not AS epic as 4.85, but it sure aint weak...
Also, let me remind you that NOTHING happens in kusari, so that hatchet would be 100% money waste. Omicrons is FULL of life. So a thresher would guaranty you lots of fun, contrary to kusari, which has never been fun.

The recon cruiser has 3 slots; two of them, only feasible mounts are cerbs, leaving the 180 degree bottom slot for a mortar/missile. This forces you to have to EK - turn a bit sideways to bring some heavier weapons to bare on your target, while they get to stay nice and slim and hurls mortars and missiles and god knows what at you.
Agility? Yes. Superior Firepower?
Only if you're kiting. Which, still leaves you outgunned to a Thresher.

Try steering for starters and 3 cerbs are better than any mortar and for light slots try solaris....it will do wonders and use you agility to dudge any fire that comes to you and orbit your oponent....does wonders again
Edit: comparable to the ai cruiser(i flown most that thing) its pretty impressive usualy when fighting caps...lead them and punish them ... your 5 cm's will take care of the missiles

But yeah, more than about "what cruiser is better" (which shouldn't be true, they're supposed to be balanced vs other ships in the zone, however it's well known some are actually better) you should think about what ship will you be using more, and therefore having more fun. I'd take the hatchet.

A TS thresher with two cerbs can EASILY dodge everything coming at it. It's the cruiser equivalent of the bottlenose :|
