Question about mecha 'ships' - EssGeeDee - 07-15-2012

I don't know if there's some statement somewhere about Disco not using mecha suits (like Gundam, etc), but I was thinking there could be a subset of Light Fighters that look like mecha. Simple models, nothing fancy or Japanese-looking, like a visual style akin to the Power Loader from the Alien movie.

Now, there could be ways to add bulk to these mecha to avoid having them being so small they can't be hit, with things like proto-wings or pods on their backs. Hands and shoulders could carry weapon hardpoints, CM and/or missiles in the head.

If there's no hard-and-fast rule against mecha, they could be explained in the lore as being specialised mining/construction bots used by mining crews to survey and manipulate potential ore asteroids, and by battleship and space station construction crews for large-scale material manipulation and heavy-duty extra-vehicular work.

Good idea, yes/no?

While I would really love to fly a mech in a FL mod, I'd say mechs don't fit into disco. They simply don't go together with the style of disco.

Neither do half of the ships we already have.

Either way, the main limit to doing mechs in FL is the need to animate the arms/legs/asundry bits. That has thus far proven next to impossible. Sure, there have been a few proof-of-concepts, but nothing enough for a really worthwhile mech.

Also, a mech would have a huge forward profile, thus making it a Supernova Magnet. Generally not real practical.

There's no reason we can't have them for ground combat though. Based entirely on rule of cool.

Go fly the Wraith

EDIT: Perhaps the SHF category would fit these better?

Mecha or Mech, usually brings the imagery of those from Mech-Warrior and Gundam. However, certain types are not out of reach in Discovery, its just had to make one thats define.

This is one of the types of mechs. If you watched Transformers: Darkside of the Moon, you probly saw it. yes, it is a mech. Aerial Support Fighter/Vtol. But something like this would need a bit more programming and if it was in Disco, the faction it would belong too(Which could be Junkers, gets a vib of that) could basically devistate a fleet with a good number of these. High manuvering, 14 total weapons(Some are multiple weapons used in the same form), able to switch directions, which would make the Kill Engine function unnecessary, and most of those weapons are on pivots, so they would almost be all turrets. All in all, Mechs could be too over-powered for Disco. Other mods might have them, but dubbed down to a point that your better off in a fighter. Anything that has pivoting guns can over-power some. So no, Mechs cant be in the mod.
