Skype is a program that most people here use to organise stuff outside the forums and the game. It has a system which allows you to make a very large chat, store all the history, and it doesn't go away when everyone logs off skype.
Useful for organising factions, allows people to get to know one another.
Before anyone says it, yes there are better alternatives, but skype is what most people around here use. To switch over to another program would require getting EVERYONE to switch and is unfeasable as a result.
