A Sabre streaked by the dust particulate cloud of Sigma 17, several Eagles on its tail. It ducked and dodged, however, the combined weight of laser and pulse cannons were steadily wearing the Sabre down, taking their toll. The shields dropped, and once the Sabres pilot realized that he was doomed, he quickly cut engines, pulled a 180-degree spin, and slammed the thrusters, Krakens blazing. As his ship was in its death throes, two Eagles fell. The Sabre was pulled down eventually, its pilot tractored in and transported elsewhere.

A piece of wreckage of one of the Eagles flew by, the name Cryer Pharmaceuticals, Inc. imprinted on it.

Fonzie Caprio was on a metal bed; uncomfortable and cold. Several straps held him down, and a guard in his mouth made sure that he didnt bite his tongue. His eyes were blood shot, pupils dilated. Fear scent rolled off of him in waves. Everywhere scientists walked excitedly, the words live specimen repeated over and over, as if he was some kind of animal to be tested on. Needle after needle was stuck into his arm, and then the pain laced through him, pain that could rightfully be called the Obliterator. Blessed darkness came on almost instantly, the minds reaction to that which is beyond its comprehension.

He woke up slowly, noticing something different. His breath was less laborious; the straps were slightly loosened, though still there. Only one scientist stood where before several had, and he did not talk excitedly. He looked more tired than anything else, though he was talking into an audio recorder as if it were some journal.

Test subject 168 was a success, Cardamine had been completely eradicated from his genetic information, very few side affects. It looks like this one at least is going to live

He went on, but it was all a blur to Caprio. He had been cleaned of Cardamine? That was unthinkable! When the dogs let him out, he would who was he kidding, they were never going to let him go. He hadnt realized he had tensed against his bonds until he relaxed, slightly submitting to his fate.

Days passed, Caprio not moving at all, constantly confined to the bed. After awhile, when all hope and resistance seemed to have been gone from him, they allowed him up in confined conditions for exercise. To quote them, they “didn’t want their best subject to be unhealthy”. Talking about him as if he were some sort of thing, instead of human. By careful listening, and appearing to be docile and defeated (to the point where they hardly noticed him, except as someone notices furnishings in a room), he learned what he was part of.

The first piece information was rather obvious: he was on Atka Station. The second was a shocker, though: he was about to be transported to Planet New Tokyo to be displayed before the Emperor, as well as several key members of the shogunate, to show how Cryer deserved fat stacks of cash for giving them a way to subvert Golden Chrysanthemums by taking their Cardamine away.

Caprio cursed his role in this, but knew that any sort of rebellion on his part, or dash for freedom, would result in nothing fruitful. He prayed for a miracle, knowing that one probably wouldn’t come.

He was rudely jostled awake, and forced into confining and demeaning shackles, which imprisoned both wrists and ankles, each restraint connecting to a small panel that was about three inches off his chest, which held the locking/unlocking mechanism. He was all but frog-marched to the docking area, which he had never seen before, and into an Armored Transport. Four Eagles sprang to life, their sinister forms almost smiling in maniacal glee of the chance to do destruction. All five ships hovered and launched, while Caprio was shoved into the cargo compartment and told curtly to stay put. He sneered after the retreating back of the guard, who stationed himself by the door, as if Caprio was about to jump up and attempt to flee.

The ship streaked through space, the noise of the cruise engines loud in the cargo bay, which was not insulated against the sound or jarring vibrations. Soon it stopped, only to be replaced by the lurching of a jump. Then, silence. The cruise engines started up again, and so it continued, until (by the number of jumps, as Caprio figured) they were in the Honshu system.

The feeling of a trade-lane (the impression of speed without the vibration of cruise speed) was quickly interrupted as the transport lurched to regular speed. This caught Caprios attention, as it was the only warning he had to brace for the weapons fire that came. Rapid-fire spoke of either Photon or Laser cannons, quickly eschewing any slower-firing guns. Either that, or a large number of ships. The comm chatter from the front of the ship spoke of both, as the frantic cries of the escorts attested to.

Soon, after numerous hits and the obvious sound of the shield generator failing, the fighting ceased. The speed of a trade lane and the vibrations of cruise did not resume. For the first time in as long as Caprio could remember, he had hope, and he held onto it like a man that would hold onto a tuft of grass to stop from falling off a cliff.

The loud clang of two ships colliding under control shook the ship, as did the incessant beeping that signified that the air lock was pressurizing. The beeping stopped, and the sound of a suction seal being broken a loud pop quickly followed on its heels. The sound of boots on hard metal, the measured pace of a marine team on unfamiliar ground, announced the boarders presence. They quickly searched the cargo bay, which is when they found him.

Hoisting Caprio up, they undid the restraints and helped him to unsteady feet. Trying to make him move faster, they got him on the ship, and undocked. A quick volley of laser fire destroyed the transport he had been on, and the ship cruised away.

The feel of external gravity kicking in announced the ships arrival at whatever destination. Caprio walked down the boarding ramp (looking back he saw that it was a Blood Dragon Heavy Fighter, refitted to carry marines obviously) to a city that was built in the hollow of a huge asteroid. On the landing pad, he was met by a med team that took him to a nearby hospital, where they ascertained what had happened to him. Then he was told, without being told how the test results came out, that he would be debriefed by someone named Dejesus. An escort carrying the file that had whatever findings the doctors had took him to an office, and knocked on the door.

It slid open without delay, and Caprio was gestured in by the guard, who remained outside. Behind the desk was a Blood Dragon who appeared to be in his mid-forties. His hair was brown, and eyes either black or brown depending on how the light took them. A noticeable scar crossed from his upper-left eye to his right cheek; the air of authority coming off of him was powerful.

Mr. Caprio, you have been saved by my men.

He nodded thanks to the man for the save, but the Blood Dragon continued. I have received your file from the Outcasts, especially that detailing your skill in a fighter.

Thats right, umm. sir. Im pretty good in a fighter.

Indeed. Some would say that you owe us a life-debt, or at least some gratitude.

At the mention of a life-debt, Caprio got a little worried. What could this strange man want? He didnt have to wonder long.

Join us. Your place amongst the Outcasts has been so cruelly ripped from you by the Cryer scientists, but perhaps it was fate that brought you to these circumstances. I believe it was your destiny all along to fly for the Dragons.

Fonzie was a very honor-bound man, so what could he do but accept?

After a couple of years flying with the Blood Dragons, he once again faced what had been with him in his previous life: Cardamine. On a run through Kyushu, his ship had been damaged by the KNF leading him to make an emergency landing on Ainu.

There he met a woman, and long cliched story short, they fell in love. Or at least fell into the thralls of infatuation. Either way, it was passionate. This usually didn't happen between Golden Chrysanthemums and Blood Dragons, as the latter looked down upon the former for their Cardamine addiction; Fonzie, however, had been an Outcast once upon a time.

So in the grips of lust, he threw away his 'destiny' that Dejesus had spoken of, for Cardamine and a woman.

On finding out about it, the Blood Dragon's disowned him (though the IFF was hard-wired to the ship he kept),and now he resides on Ainu, flying for the Golden Chrysanthemums, once more high on Cardamine.

The End
