Just finished recalibrating the cruise engines this morning, the old girl should run like a dream now, no more bone shaking on the charge up. Still getting an uneven burn from the thruster though, damned if I know what's wrong with it, the thing is brand new. Anyway she'll be spaceworthy once more, about time too the Libertonians and Rheinlanders have been smashing the living daylights out of each other. 'Course the clean up is left to us after they've stripped the good stuff off weapons, drive core and the like. Saying that the alloys alone are worth a couple of credits and a fair bit more for superconductors if you're lucky.
Kruezberg's pretty quite compared to Rotchester, less nutjobs here, less drugs too thankfully those cardi freaks give me the hebejebes. *Shudder*
I can't talk though after having that fling with an Outcast girl a fair few years back, she was quite something, dark hair, green eyes and all the body a man could want. Heh she couldn't handle me with that breather on so we had to take it to her ship. Guess that was my first drug trip but hell it was worth it, we burnt out the dampeners that night...Her Sabre couldn't handle the rocking ha!

Err where was I?

Oh yeah, we had some yahoo in the bay when I was working on the cruise, banging on about wanting to sell a bona fide piece of tradelane tech, fella' wanted two mill for it. Two mill for a hunk of metal the size of a datapad, no one paid a damn bit of attention to him 'cept me. I offered to take a look at it, had my microscope all set up and ready, showed him my degree in metallurgical engineering too. The Bretonian Engineering Corps College always impresses folks, bloody well better and all, I worked my fingers to the bone for that degree. Doubt that idiot could even spell metallurgical engineering.
Well I had a butchers at it, 'lo and behold right there on the laser cut edge was Ageira's logo and a product code to boot. Naturally I told the guy he'd been had, “nothing more than reactor casing” I said “give you two hundred for it.” He went off on one, saying he found it in a shot up tradelane section in Leeds and how certain he was that it was the genuine article. Never realised that it was worthless scrap that'd drifted in by chance.
He took the two hundred there and then, probably spent half of it getting hammered the damned fool. I'll need to get back to Trafalgar to have a decent look at it, my equipment there is far more advanced than my electron microscope. I've got to admit I'm pretty curious to see what this thing is, or was, knowing my luck it'll be a section of whitebox or chuck from one of their ships.

I can't believe it, some clown with a badge has arrested me for attempting to cross into Liberty with scrap. Has that boy been to New York? The damn system is seventy five percent scrap!
Bloody police, I refused to pay his fine, one million credits he wanted! One million, as if I'd be hauling scrap with that kind of scratch!
Idiots with badges honestly, police state my foot, moron state more like.
* Incoherent grumbling*
Now hes carting me off to Vierlande, I asked him if they have decent coffee. Bet that got right up his piggy little snout.
Prison for scrap, idiots the whole lot of 'em...

Stopped over at Rotchester to get some grub after a delightful stay at Vierlande. What a pigs ear that was, the warden couldn't see why I had been arrested for essentially transporting rubbish. I told him about the officer's idea that I would be selling scrap to Liberty, “might as well be selling H fuel to the Kusari” I said “If it'd been anything else I could of understood but scrap of all things? Not on your life.” Fella seemed to agree with me but he said the system registers all ships who dock so I'd still be on record regardless, he'd issue me with the smallest sentence possible a mere four hours which wasn't too bad.
Well since I was stuck there I made good use of the time examining the tradelane piece. Didn't make much headway really though I did discover the piece suffered two simultaneous explosions, the first doesn't seem to have carried enough force to dislodge the piece however the impact caused enough heat to weaken the metal which was then dislodged by the second explosion, all within a fraction of a second. I've noticed small pockets of foreign material on the edge of the damaged section, could be the remains of whatever held this piece in situ.

I'm heading to Trafalgar now currently waiting for traffic at the California gate, no doubt some hapless sod has been pirated again. Think I'll head through Magellan, the IMG folks usually keep the lanes quiet.

Thirteen hours flight, never again. I can't feel my backside.
I'm about to dock at Trafalgar...*Yawning* I'll run the tests tomorrow, I'm just too tired...

Charlie: "Docking bay two is open Mac, hows your flight?"
Nigel: "Bloody long Charlie, I'll tell you about it tomorrow mate I just want me bed."
Charlie: "Fair enough lad, you can tell me at breakfast, you're buying."
Nigel: "Sod you, I paid last time."
Charlie: "Alright but no second helpings fatboy."
Nigel: "Yeah yeah, cheers Charlie. Oh forgot I had this on..."

I began analysing the metal this morning, I've taken two samples one from the damaged edge and one from the undamaged corner. With any luck I'll be able to isolate the foreign material which could shed a great deal of light on the purpose of this fragment. I'm testing the conductivity of the first sample, I have a hunch it may be part of the emitter or possibly the generator for a tradelane the clue came from that laser cut edge. It is cut with such precision that is must serve an important, perhaps fundamental, function. What the function is? Damned if I know but I thoroughly intend to find out.

On a brighter note I got to catch up with Charlie, he's a good lad, bit hopeless with women though, he's had his eye on Agnes for months and still hasn't got the balls to talk to her. It's like being a teenager all over again. I know how much those two like each other so I helped things along, he'll find out tonight when she knocks on his door all dolled up for their 'date'. If I could see his face when he opens that door, oh it'd be a picture an' half. Heh I might ask Agnes to get a photo for me...On second thought maybe not, he'll already be after my blood, best not to antagonise him more.

Anyway I'm headin' out from Barrier Gate, got wind of a fella in the IMG who may be able to get me into the Colonial's good-books. Word on the lanes' is they are looking to rebuild their navy, can't blame 'em I'd want a lot of ships too if the 'Casts where snarling on my doorstep, bloody 'Casts, well it's payday for an entrepreneurial junker like myself. Problem is this bloke is all the way up in Tau 39 that means I'll be dodging the Gallics and the Outcasts, sod it, who dares wins eh.

That is the last time I'm listening to any damned rumours from those barflies at Barrier Gate. A wild goose chase that's what is was, blasted my engines to buggery getting up to Jakarta all to be told I've been had! Three accursed days of this nonsense all so I can get a good price for scrap without crossing the entire galaxy!
I did manage to get it sorted after some decent bloke pointed me to the Council of all people. Had to ping-pong between contacts in a few systems, knackering my cruise in the process but it was worth it. I'm current at Sabah unloading my cargo I'll stay for a day or so to chit-chat a little, see if there is a demand that isn't being met or a bit of info I can use, that kinda thing. Besides I've gotta fix my engines again after all that running around, I pushed the old girl a little too hard hoping to out run any unwanted company. Good thing too, caught a glimpse of an Outcast battleship in one of the Tau's. Great hulking monster weaving through the asteroids. Damned if I know how they manage to build such things, though I got a feeling that our scrap has something to do with it.

Now, that bit of metal is still being tested so far the results show its an unusual mix of alloys that much is consistent for both pieces, the weird thing is these alloys show no signs of heat degradation but high electrical conductivity. I'm no physicist but that should be impossible, I don't know maybe it's been contaminated or I'm simply missing something which to be perfectly honest is very likely considering what I'm trying to do. I had a feeling this little project would be beyond me, didn't think it'd be quite so early on.
On second thought I'll get back to Trafalgar sharpish, those results need going over with a fine tooth comb, make sure I haven't overlooked something. Maybe ask my fellow junkers, surely someone has a background in physics or know someone who does.
One way or another I'm findin' out what the hell this thing is.
