Bretonian Privateer - El Nino - 06-13-2008 I am going to play somekind of a Privateer. A man contracted by a nation (bretonia) to covertly pirate on opposing nations. I'd use a generic Pirate ID, a Bretonian Gunboat and preferably NO tag. I would be friendly with bretonia, I would however keep a close eye on Kusari, Corsairs, Criminals and such. Probably I would pirate all non bretonian traders. Depending on how helpful are they to Bretonia... (Let's say I see someone flying engine components to Cambridge, there would be no tax... whatsoever, light arms to the Corsairs would probably got them blown up or out of cargo) My name would be Privateer II or something like that, to let people know right away that a Bretonian Gunboat part isn't a joke... I'd like your input, ideas, about anything. Does this contradict with server rules, lawful ship pirating,... Bretonian Privateer - Unseelie - 06-13-2008 Well, the bret GB and pirate ID rather clash, I can see that being a problem...We never tried it, I don't think, so I'm not sure, but I do know that pirating with a full bretonian rep and ID will get you sanctioned, even if the community supports it, so I'd be careful with that. Other than that, whats the policy, exactly? A privateer would only attack enemies of bretonia, not anyone other than bretonians. But a real house navy GB should not be pirate IDd - imho. that's how I see it. Bretonian Privateer - worldstrider - 06-13-2008 It was not uncommon for a privateer to use a personal private(hence, privateeer) vessel--though the military would usually provide support and possibly outfit it with weapons. The privateer was meant to be self-supporting once equipped and spent most of his time in enemy territory and resupplying at allied or friendly foreign bases. The C.S.S. Shenandoah--a commerce raider--spent almost a year at sea as did other vessels--resupplying in France and other nations. There is a big naval history of privateers and as described above it would be very appropriate as a real life comparison. Bretonian Privateer - El Nino - 06-13-2008 Rep wouldn't be full bretonian. Becouse piracy is suppose to be covert. The crew would be ex-RAF. The privateer would attack ONLY enemies of bretonia. Basicly traders would be devided in to two groups, those who support Bretonia and those who support it's enemies. The ship would also engage traditional bretonian enemies and their warships. I could use a pirate gunboat, but then i'd be just a generic pirate and that's not even nearly as fun... Bretonian Privateer - worldstrider - 06-13-2008 There are naval vessels in war formally designated as "commerce raiders". That would be the Bismarck, Graf Spee, etc. These are military commands and crew and fly under national colors representing its government and armed forces. Privateers are given permission to participate in piracy that is recognized as being pledged to be performed only against enemies of state for which they have been papered. It was done so a captured ship could show it's letters of marquee and not be hanged by their captors but instead be treated as prisoners of war. It also prevented them from having maritime charges of piracy brought against them at home, during or after a conflict. Basically it was an advance pardon for a non-military individual executing an otherwise illegal violation of accepted international maritime law that a government normally would honor and enforce. Bretonian Privateer - Drifter84 - 06-13-2008 I can't remember the wording on whats allowed , but wouldn't a Freelancer or Merc ID work better than pirate ? JohnLenin above has a point , maybe contact QCP ( Stoat ) , they will probably be quite au fait with ins and outs of privateering in Kusari etc . As to not joining them outright , I'm assuming you have some RP reason which you'll divulge at the appropriate time ? Looking forward to seeing how this develops , good luck ! That's exactly what i'd be going for... a Bretonian self sustained ship that would pirate on it's enemies.Bretonia would officialy deny the ships existance. So I wouldn't be connected to bretonia in any other way but resupplying, weapons, fuel... Bretonian Privateer - worldstrider - 06-13-2008 Not to speak for him but there are obvious reasons. Privateers could use dirty tricks (and did regularly). Flying a neutral country's flag until they were close and ready to engage (to prevent fleeing). Using un-uniformed crew and hiding cannon under crates and nets and tarps so as to look like unarmed merchants. They really were 'deputized pirates'. If an official military ship did these things it was often a violation of the articles of war--but a "private"eer could get away with it as they weren't "military". Bretonian Privateer - El Nino - 06-13-2008 OH, look there's a Faction for Bretonian privateers... Queen Carina's Privateers. Excellent. |
