... you guys could figure out how to add a "direct communication" feature to FL like that of day z (Arma 2), where players could push to talk and everyone within scanner range could hear them. This way the radio chatter would become more than just NPCs. I've posted this on the "new ideas" thread already, but I believe direct communications is such a good idea it deserves its own thread, so that a skilled programmer may come riding on a white Camara and make it happen.

I believe something that major would require the source code, which Microsoft has never released, and probably won't release, because their a bunch of greedy :::Nope::: who won't do it if they won't make money off of it.

correct me if i got that wrong :

you wish to talk only to those players who are within your scanner range? - which is usually something like 6k to 14k

if that is what you mean - isn t that the default "local" chat that is activated when you just chat away?

right now we have:

- personal message / i think its also possible to automaticly pm-target
- local message which makes everyone within scanner range hear you
- system chat which makes everyone in the system hear you
- game chat which is reserved for admins - like console chats

or do you mean audio local chat - afraid we cannot do that - i believe... it requires the sourcecode or some weird hack.

so i m afraid- the communication in freelancer supports only the written word. all else needs to be set up outside of freelancer ( skype, teamspeak or other )

Maybe I could do that. No promises, but - i'll look at it Big Grin

does he mean actually talking and people in range would hear as in voip ?, if so that would be cool, but would it then interefer with people using ts?

have you seen videos of/played day z and experienced its voice confrontations? it's a completely different experience from typing, and in day z videos the gamer uses both ts and voip, however voip is only activated when he needs to speak and it doesn't conflict at all with chatting over ts with friends. It's an added level of immersion and also a much quicker means of communication, and frankly, *he cautiously puts the words as to not offend anyone* using stars to convey emotion and tone of voice of the roleplay character in the text chat is kinda... gay?

main problem is that such feature would require tonns of free MBits to serve your audio chat feature, which is likely would require more bandwidth and server load.

Well i have a quad core dedicated server with 8gb. it can run about 50 call of duty MW servers and run several teamspeak servers as well, running freelancer server should be even easier by 20x times.
Adding voip will already put more pressure on this server, unless it would be a client-side pack.

Wrong. Freelancer is only capable of utilizing a single core, so the speed of the processor matters far more than the number of cores you have.

Anyway I doubt voip could be done without the sourcecode, amusing as it would be.

Well, we could find some opensource voIP protocol, or with free SDK...
FYI: Teamspeak eats ~10-30 kilobits per second, so that's no problem for you and for server. The main problem is - who will develop 'zis?
