Angelfire's Help the noobies by bribing them policy. - Angelfire - 06-28-2008  I have two major strategies for helping noobies. The one is on my Angel which is 100% pure advice and support. The other is on my Angelfire character which is shameless bribery or excessive rewarding. In my limited experience as an incurable goodie two shoes (a naughty one of course..heh heh), I have found that the world of 'dudes and damsels in distress' comprises of two basic forms of Humanity. 1) The 'Gimme Gimme Gimme' Type. In actual fact, these types can rarely be rehabilitated as the apparent benifits of this mindset are more rewarding than any kind of benevolence could ever be. They Condescendingly call helpful people unwarrented names and feel it is 'sweet', 'cute' and 'noble' to help others but in the end 'you gotta look after yourself'. They sometimes go through their entire lives never experiencing the power of synergystic exponential favor. (When people you were kind to as juniors attain greatness and/or wealth and decide to pay you back tenfold as well as tell all their friends about you.) Their favorite line is: 'Charity starts at home.' (Problem is, when charity starts at home, it usually ends at home too...) 2)The 'Kumbaya' type. This is a rare breed of humanity which we seem to have a lot of in Discovery. They have the 'What do you need me to do to help me help myself so that I can get strong and help you' mentality. These can sometimes be mistaken for 'emo' or 'self righteous' and exist in many forms and places. You find them as indies, in clans and factions and every now and then as Angels (on Disco I mean). Sometimes they are quiet and wise, speaking only when their voice is needed (Like Dusty..heh heh) ...and sometimes they are loud, overbearing and preachy (Like certain cabbage lovers we know). They make just as many mistakes as anyone else but will do just about anything in their power to make things around them pleasant for everyone. (Looks at Puck and laughs out loud). Most of us have both 1 and 2 in us. But we will usually lean towards one of the 2 sub species heavily, depending on life circumstance, upbringing and so forth. My shameless bribery policy is aimed at the no 1 group. My entire goal there is to get them to stop lolling and pumping smilies in system chat, possibly get them to register on the forums and: 'prize A' get them into a faction with cool, accepting players who will influence that fellow and mentor him when he opens himself up for it. I usually reward them 10k per rule question passed, 100k if they get the system chat protocols right and up to 500k if they register on the forums and actually make a post of some sort. My excessive rewards policy is aimed at the no 2 group. 'Jenny' (fictitious name) joins the server, has been RP'ing (in other games) for a long time, has finished the single player, is already active on the forums, answers your disco questions easily (sometimes in different words to your own), asks questions that show her to be a respecter of community rules and someone who wants to have fun and add value. *make jackpot noises here* I immediately introduce them to the world of Trading. It's a great way to get to know the server, the lawful factions, the pirates and the Indies before you choose a faction or affiliation. If 'Jenny' has passed the tests flawlessly, I don't think she really needs to start from scatch. She's done it in the SP and now needs to get to know the players. I gladly oblige her with her first train. If she shows herself to be a great addition to the community,I will make a deal of some sort like maybe: When you hit 50 million by yourself, I will help you buy an advanced train. This is what was done for me as a RepEx employee and it boosted my love for the community greatly. Not everyone has 6 hours every day to trade so that they have the money to try out their first uber VHF or gunboat etc. Some are very keen to experience player interaction more so than game dynamic so why not reward their making our lives easier by us making theirs easier? In my first two months here I was given 60 mil towards my adv train, 40 mil for a gunboat (twice) and countless other gifts from all sorts of awesome players. I think Frozen actually bought me my OPG Gunboat back in the day (He wasnt even in OPG). Asno paid for three or four different weapon configurations until mine was 'right'. Mwerte did the same for my RepEx|BT Gunboat and countless others have set me up with ships that I almost did not get to use yet are happy to play with me when I log in on them. Skoko set me up with my current Angelfire GB after my player wipe... The benevolence I have experienced has not lessened the game experience for me in any way, it has enhanced it considerably! Bottom line: -I bribe the sucky attitudes and selfish types to at least 'know' some of the rules. -I reward those who clearly don't need training wheels but rather need to be empowered to become an active part of our community. Sometimes you have the pleasure of watching a No1 become a No2... It's a great thing to chuck 5 or 10 mil at someone like that and tell them to 'pay it forward'. Concerning rules: My philosophy is as follows: - Those who respect, understand and obey the rules can be trusted to bend them, break some and create others. - Those who despise the rules will inevitably become pwned by them. Life is just like that, it's the law of respect. - That which you honor will reward you, that which you dishonor will reject you. If I had more play time, I would actually focus more on The Angels pure help philosophy. My time is limited so I have had to resort to bribery and corruption! Mwaahaaahaaaaaa! I dunno if any of that makes sense to anyone else, I just thought it might be decent to share that philosophy as it effects us all. Flame gently, I would far prefer a light tan over a roasted ass! Angelfire's Help the noobies by bribing them policy. - El Nino - 06-28-2008 Aye, this poost brings tears to my eyes...
