With this idea, a capital ship with enough computing power, such as the Lane Hacker Spyglass, or the Order Recon Cruiser, maybe Carrier class vessels can now mount a new piece of equipment that is intended to act as a "Force Multiplier".
The AWAC equipment (defensive package) is a stronger sensor and computer package intended to scan and identify targets at a further range, while also have the the force multiplier of attempting to disrupt enemy weapon systems. The only way I can think of is a passive +20% chance to counter missiles with CM's, chance to automatically counter missiles for allies in the area without the use of CM's and grant that effect to all allies within a certain proximity.
The Fire Control equipment (offensive package) is a large computer with the sole purpose of linking with nearby allied vessels and aids their onboard computers with targetting data. Meaning that missiles and torpedoes will track more effectively, especially for fighter craft due to their lighter computer packages. This could lead to budd of missile tracking speed of +20% while granting capital ships extra firing range for their counter-capital weapons, such as Mortars and whatnot. (Likely balance breaking).
I'm unsure how possible any of this is, but giving actual combat support roles to ships that in lore/roleplay should aid that battle in some form without the use of weapons is an appealing prospect. Encouraging people to co-ordinate with support ships, protect them and give big bonuses to fighters in fleet sized battles.
Balance wise, is probably going to skull-bum it, still though, feedback?
Yeah, I got the thought running since I just finished HAWX on my OnLive, and AWACS can provide such a great command bonus to the battlefield where there is no local command structure or facility.
Recon cruisers actually pulling effective recon work and assisting their escorts passively would be brilliant, and logical to me.
This is an awesome idea. I think it should be doable with FLHook magic.
Perhaps use the damage multipliers that are available on weapons against shields and convert them for use here?
This would give good RP material for capital class ships for specific tasks and would also help in giving some capital ships specific support roles for aid in battle or patrols.

Also, these kinda reminds me of the subsystems on capships in "Homeworld II".

Support role ships would be awesome, I am unsure about how the damage boosters would be handled, but it would need to be really thought through to stop support spam...
I guess a good thing for support vessels would be that they don't directly take part in combat, since they aren't meant to, but can if pressed. This could lead to a lot more RP in combat rather than it being axe murderer staring/shooting contests.

Yes, I want them too and that's a better term for them.

Stop support spam? Easy. No stacking of bonus multipliers. Just once. So even if you have 23641278 CM enhancing ships, the bonus is still 20%.
Non-combat support ships would be nice. Think of them like mobile command centres, just like the command frigates of Homeworld II.
Give them some degree of armor, good countermeasures and no weapons.

Ah fair point, non-stacking would be good.
The command ships should be well armoured, fairly nimble if they ever get their own models. Give them some turrets though, NPC's are a pain.
