mealstrom: you re going a bit too far now. design is just in the eye of the beholder. - the new spyglass is a good model - and it was agreed on by the faction who is using it.
anyway - this is not the thread to discuss that stuff - you can make your own thread where you discuss the failures of designs that you consider to be "bad" - and the modellers can justify their reasons - if they feel like it.
i do suggest to come up with a less insulting phrasing and more constructive suggestions to better the models.

"Who is it doing this synthetic type of alpha beta psychedelic funkin'?"
You may be right, this may not be the place to discuss it. I don't think I've gone to far, though. I haven't gone anywhere beyond my original wording and that wasn't considered going to far. I haven't insulted the designer or his/her talents. I've simply stated that this particular design isn't and shouldn't be considered adequate for disco. You should understand that, some of your designs that were far better were considered inadequate for disco.
Design isn't just in the eye of the beholder, either. There are diffinative styles, techniques, and levels of skill. Most anybody can tell the difference between a Rockwell and a Picaso, for example, or between Victorian and Bavarian archetecture. These are solid quantifiable differences and have nothing to do with whether you, the observer, like them or not.
If the faction truely likes it, rather than just being happy at getting new toys, good for them. I don't, and there is no rule against me saying so as long as I don't attack any players or factions.
Edit: Maybe I should have said, "...whether we, the observers, like them...." rather than you. If that sounds like a jab at Jinx it wasn't meant to. I'll leave it as it stands, for now, though as it does make it more personal and taste is personal while I was trying to show that design is not.
Quote:I don't understand why =CR= needs to exists. Sorry for being such a hater, I just don't see their purpose, at least at this moment, when even their way of roleplaying is imported from BSG, not to say about the ships.
I'm not going to quote everything you said Maelstrom, as I can't be arsed addressing every individual point of yours. The Spyglass is a good mesh, with distinguished geometry, and a texture job that matches the geometry. (Matching panels, details, etc)
You've obviously no experience with 3d modeling or texturing, so I'll forgive you for not noticing such things, but I implore you to take a nice long look at the 'glass and compare it to the Liberty Carrier, with it's gigantic stretched textures all over.
So I will say this. Do not insult me, or my work, when you haven't a clue what you're talking about. I'm going to be nice and not even pull the "Go do something better yourself" card, because that's a lame one. It only takes a trained eye to critique something, not experience actually doing it. From an experienced perspective and somebody who's been doing this for years I'll tell you you think it looks like a 'piece of poop' from the dark textures used, when in actuality the mesh looks like a warship that will RIP AND TEAR YOUR GUTS.
LOL, that's an import with a single Liberty texture slapped onto it.
I don't care if those ships have stretched textures or fewer polygons. Look at thier design, thier shape, thier character. The new spyglass has none of that. Essentially it's a flying poop with 50 bazillion polygons.
You're forgetting to take one big factor into account here: The standard lane hacker fighter/gunboat line is based on outcast design and technology due to the lane hacker-outcast alliance. The Spyglass was a liberty-built ship that was captured/stolen by the HF, and it certainly does resemble liberty warship design. The 'spikes' and such on it are reminiscent of the Order's Resheph Cruiser, which is designed for a similar purpose: Communications interception and reconaissance. All of those spikes are antennae designed to pick up every possible signal in nearby space.
The Spyglass doesnt have to look like hacker ships, because it -isnt- a hacker ship.

Where in the name of Freelancer does it look like 'poop'? All I'm seeing is a 'great job' textured ship and highly detailed front to back. A part of the model design was made by me which the idea on how Tycho explained to me didnt gave me an image of a turd.
Whatever you're dropping on that toilet in your house and looks similar to the new Spyglass... oh boy... may god have mercy on you.
Nope, I didn't forget that. If you look back at my posts I stated that it doesn't look like a liberty ship or a hacker redesign. Liberty ships are much heavier of construction than the new spyglass model. They also have very definite wet navy aspects and designs that the new spyglass doesn't share. As for the Resheph, it isn't a liberty design, it's solely an Order design. It does have a lot in common with liberty ships, but it wasn't designed by liberty.
And lets look at the communication spikes on both ships. Look at the bow of each ship and you see similar communications spikes. Look at the other spikes and large differences can be seen. The spikes on the spyglass's bow differ from the spikes amidships and on the stern. They are mounted differently, styled differently, and shaped differently. That tells me they aren't for the same purpose, that they are style, rather than function.
Whether it is or isn't, though, is secondary for me. I like variety and a totally new ship for them wouldn't faze me in the least. I prefer it fit thier style, but styles evolve so the ship design could too. My problem is with the ships overall lack of design chacteristics.
First, I didn't insult you. Not once did I attack you, call you a name, or belittle you. I didn't even know you designed it and haven't said a thing about the person who did.
Second, I mentioned that the ships I used as examples had stretched textures and fewer polygons than your model, so I obviously do know what I'm talking about. They are still superior models. A chevette tooled in leather and gilded in gold is still just a chevette, but a Bentley is a work of art no matter what condition it's in.
Third, I don't think it looks like a poop because of the dark textures, I'm mostly color blind, every thing is about the interplay of dark and light for me. I think it looks like a poop because of it's shape and lack of defining characteristics. Wrap the textures around the shape of a poop and add spikes, you'll see what I mean.
