a) you can take another commodity, which is somewhere on the way
b) you can take more of the commodity you are getting right now since most of them will be needed later anyways
c) not everything is about base building
d) you can get less defenses as a trade-off, I mean, really, most traders complain they got no chances anyways, so what does it matter now ?
Doesn't mean I don't like my armed-to-the-teeth transports too. If only we had Q-ships.
But we DO have Q ships, if you use a little imagination.
A Bison with the right turrets on it will take down a NPC Rogue Gunboat.
If you slap a cau8 on it, the survivabilty goes way up.
Think about the other transports out there with 10+ turrets on them.
Also, 'Shire' anyone? Shire's have been scaring the poop out of pirates for ages.
To get back on topic, all of my ships have armor of some sort and the best mix of weapons I can think of, the cargo hold space I lose doesn't bother me that much.
Yeah mostly I just hate having to go on another run to bring back 620 of something.. And having to track down the base admin to say 'how much of this stuff do we need so I don't overbuy?' Because otherwise you end up with a lot of extra stuff laying around taking up valuable space that you need for essentials.
' Wrote:Oh, that's right - you guys don't really want to role-play as traders, though, do you? (Yes, the gauntlet HAS been thrown!)
I have three different characters who are traders. Two fly ZBTs with no armor. One has a freighter shield and the other a regular shield. The third commands a BWT that has a regular shield and a full armament of weaponry, but no armor.
While your character might need guns and armor to survive his trip from civilization into the Edge; mine typically don't.
So I'd advise you to remember that there are many many different ways to role play a trader and that your way isn't the right or only way.
That gauntlet you were speaking of? Wasn't much of a gauntlet.

I fly through reds pretty often, I think I mentioned a few posts ago. Those gallic cruisers in Tau-31 tend to require some fffggg, but the few gunboats I run into aren't much and the rest is nothing. Apart from a brush with the law and a run-in with a phantom 3 years ago, the only thing that's killed my train is planet and sundiving due to not paying attention.
