Devs can hardly - "teach everyone" however I am sure they would be more than willing to Q&A in the modding forum if you ran into problems.
[23:02:11] psymplejester: *did part of his degree on trying to import created objects into FL* ... was a nightmare
[23:02:49 | Edited 23:03:02] psymplejester: Unreal and bethesda have tool sets... Freelancer tool sets are like cutting your own balls off and trying to paint a picture using the red blood and the white "baby juice"...

If you wanna learn make a skype chat, I dare you... do it now... people learn better in groups.
When you run into problems you really cant solve ask the Devs.
' Wrote:Linkus, the problem with tutorials is that you don't just learn from tutorials. It takes some guidance. Its like a professor just saying "Read the textbook, submit your papers".
I don't know any professors that would do that.
You could do a course in Engineering, whichever type you fancy really, never attend a single lecture and only use textbooks. You would do quite well.
Guidance is helpful but nearly all the modding areas have been covered by pretty damn detailed tutorials that offer a hell of a lot of guidance. Seriously, the main job of a dev helping folks along is to remind them to make sure they didn't make spelling mistakes or type an entry wrong.
' Wrote:So what you're saying is you didn't do your job, and now you're complaining about people offering to help even though other people don't do theirs, correct?
edit: Instead of crying about people trying to be useful for once, why not give a link to the supposed myriad of tutorials that are out there? Tell us what we are supposed to be looking for. I'll go and spend a damn month learning how to edit whatever damn sort of files I need to if you tell me what I'm looking for.
There's a tutorial section. There are plenty of threads on these forums where people have asked for help and been pointed in the right direction. Don't use your laziness as a debate point - use the search engine.
I did my job, then realised folks like yourself won't ever be content with what happens.
Perfect example would be the Zephyr.
It was the CR faction that wanted rid of it, in favour of a battleship.
You know, the faction that actually earnt that shipline, instead of simply inheriting it and then complaining about it.
' Wrote:You know what would be even better? Roll back to .84, where the game was still fun. Wait, no, that won't solve it, because the -community- was good back then. Now it's real frickin' neato to be an ass to everyone -constantly.-
I'm not going to revisit this thread to argue stuff. If this makes you upset/butthurt/colonrampaged, I don't particularly care.
Just..pointing out that you don't seem to like the community, so the player base is clearly a terrible one and so not a valid point for staying.
Not that you intended to respond in this topic.
As you really don't care about this big bad terrible community.
@Kai
What do you want to modify?
Type it into the search engine, or look in the tutorial section, or look on the Starport.
Then post a topic or use skype to ask for help if you run into trouble.

No, the -majority- of the playerbase isn't worth even talking to. I have my group of friends that play here. Everyone else can go bone themselves, quite frankly.

So you don't care about the rest of the community but want the entire mod changed..for the community?
' Wrote:Hey, Devs and Balance Team, I don't think you get it. Stop nerfing stuff, you're killing the community.
Why do I get the feeling it has a lot more to do with that group of friends and this:

Whatever's in demand. I'd ask you, but you aren't a dev anymore.
Also, the Starport doesn't load at all for me. It keeps saying "the connection was reset." I've always had this problem with that site, even on other computers and different locations. Are you sure that the site's still up?

Read threads in this area. Check The Starport. Once you've picked an area you want to learn, search The Starport and its archives for that particular area. Simple.

The way any modder will tell you to learn Freelancer's systems is to jump right in and play with the files. Read the tutorials and create the example systems. Actually doing it will allow you to familiarise yourself with Freelancer's file structure and way of working.
That's how I've learned, and you can contact a more experienced developer privately if something breaks that you can't fix. At which point has any dev said "no, I refuse to help you" to anyone who's shown sufficient willingness to actually learn?
I can talk people through infocards, news articles and internal base NPCs if they'd like.
' Wrote:Okay, I'll go play with myself.
If there was another server that had half the playerbase of this one, I would be out of here before you could blink.
Good for you.
EDIT @ Kai: http://the-starport.net/ is still fully functional. The Lancer's Reactor was shut down, but their forum archives are still preserved by The Starport. TLR's archives are an absolute bloody goldmine of lost knowledge.

I thought the dev team were..killing the community?
No, I want the mod changed because I want the mod changed. I never said it was for the community.
