WW 1/2 references are not banned, Rheinland in itself is based on German Empire bit prior to WW1 itself I believe, with some Weimar Republic (interwar period) thrown into the mix.
References ingame are handled tastefully enough.
Things like this are sanctionable because our community is not mature enough to handle such material tastefully.

I wholeheartedly agree.
people being butthurt is usually the cause. history is history. people should work together and improve... but there will always be those who are hurt recalling events.
I believe the referencing is limited. We can name an LABC Iwo Jima, have the carrier Saratoga, or have the Churchill-class. But the SCRA was denied the ability to call any battleship Stalin.
The bans are for the things such as the Holocaust or Stalin's purges, and not things like Churchill or even battle names. Hell, Okinawa was bloodied than Iwo Jima, but it's a system name.
Essentially, if you're going to reference a war, do it tastefully. Don't name it after someone or something that is universally agreed to be downright atrocious.
