So, hang on, a couple people here have spoken about the Sandwich Rule as if it were something to enforce or to take action on. To be clear, it was never intended for this. It was meant to be a personal self-test, not a standard to hold others to.
The original wording, at least for what I put into the Sanction Template thread all those years ago, was this:
Gheis Wrote:The Sandwich Rule: If you're upset or agitated when you write something up, before you hit send go make a sandwich and, preferably, eat said sandwich. Nobody can be mad when they've got a sandwich. Once said sandwich has been enjoyed, reread the post. If it still seems sensible to post, then all right, proceed. Otherwise, get rid of that nonsense and go play the game.
For context, this was something that was meant to (humorously) deter unnecessary and sometimes unfounded sanctions players were submitting as a form of vengeance for losing in the game. It's good advice veiled with comedy, and always a worthy thing to apply to anything you're about to do. It was something I tried to exercise back when I was on the leadership team here, with sometimes mixed results, of course. To hold someone else to it is the weakest form of argument against that person's position.
The assumption should be that if someone's posted something, there's got to be a reason a person has done that, even if it is negative. That shouldn't be invalidated by any rule, humorous or otherwise. We do have standards of conduct and decency, though, and that's what's enforceable. Sometimes advising someone to take a step back and a deep breath can be worth doing to prevent further escalation, but that isn't enforceable either, just good advice when delivered from a kind perspective.
Just wanted to ship my unwelcome two cents in. And yes, I had a bowl of pasta and a beer before I posted this. Living by the sandwich rule has made me a fat and happy zoner.
That seems fair, I can't be mad at that, but i don't want people trying to use it for some moral highground u mad bro crap.
Sometimes stuff needs to be pointed out and this potentially could make for large circle jerks if used like that.
This entire topic kinda reminds me of an old rule I set upon myself in the earlier days of my RP on Discovery UK. I nicknamed it the handwritten RP rule, and the idea of it was that, before any RP was actually posted, you would get a pen or pencil and a bit of paper, physically write that RP out and read it back. Twice, preferably. If it made no sense, or seemed silly in any other way, then don't post that RP and simply bin it.
