It used to be like that 800 years ago, it's tedious.
You can also set a hotkey to drop all your cargo at once, if using a mining freighter or ship like arrastra you can just tap that as you fill and its about the same. Just be careful because you can also hit it at the wrong time with 5k of something and not even notice until you get to your destination

but without ID mining bonuses, it turns filling these 5Kers who are willing to pay ever-increasing prices from a 50 second job to like a 10 minute job.
