I saw lot of "sh*t" in this thread I felt a bit concerned as leader of the corsairs pirates the Black Sails are.
If we read you hostile (GMG or Outcast for example), you may be pirated up to the maximum but still reasonable we can take. 1k per cargo-unit or all the cargo.
If we read you neutral (Zoners), we stay next to half the cargo (value or content).
If we see someone that play "the admin said that", we double the fine, cause I know from experience my wingmen are right !
There is no rules that says we can't charge as much as the RP should allow us to do. I'd say it's even encouraged to make up the fines depending to the RP !
And a last note :
if you have no more profit but no loss on this run after you got pirated, that's still nothing you have lost ! I know lot of people that feel stupid after they refused to may 2M and then paid 3M for a new cargo hold.
Quote:But sacraficing about 20~50 of your profits isin't that much. You still get money don't you?
Right, if you keep in mind that 50% of the profit is not 50% of the cargo, especially for high investment / low margin commodities. Considering a single commodity, let X be the initial quantity, Y the initial unit cost, X' and Y' the same terms at the selling point. To barely recover his investment (i.e. no profit at all), the trader must deliver a ratio R = X'/X = Y/Y' of his initial cargo.
Now what happens if the initial unit cost is 1200, the selling unit cost is 1800 and a pirate asks him for half of the cargo ? The trader actually looses money : he drops 1/2 of the cargo when he had to deliver at least R = 2/3 of it. If the pirate only wants to charge half of the profit, he sould ask for (1 - R)/2, in this case = 1/6.
However this is the trader's problem only, the pirate is not expected to be nice and kindly do the maths:)It's up to the trader to carry only low R commodities like neon, carbon-stuffes or tobacco bought in the right stations. The time consumption is then another problem...
Hai Grimly!!! I have to say I love your post here. It's very clear, as it's always been that the deal with the pirates is they will demand what they demand, within a reasonable standard that they themselves maintain. Honestly, this whole notion of what is and what is not okay is kinda weak. A pirate, to my mind, is going to take everything they can... hello...PIRATES. However, I mean to insist a trader dump five K of cargo when they are in a small fighter... and can't take it all... yeah well... prolly not too kewl. The idea is to get yer cut. So I totally see that. However, if it's to totally hack up the trader, now you are getting into a terrorist or perhaps a personal deal. Still... let's keep our eyes toward continued profits for all parties concerned. I suppose that's why I always just kinda smiled and slipped the credits over. That and my Zwhale has no guns and no chance of running. We Zoners use other means. Diplomatic. Oh and I smile a lot.
Regarding piracy - the BHG| and the MM are for hire at quite reasonable rates to provide escorts. And we KNOW how to escort you. If you're running a large or expensive cargo from someplace - it makes a lot more sense to pay an escort 1 million credits than it does to pay a pirate 10 million.
Actually, if the lolpirates would just concentrate on the silent powertraders and leave the decent people alone, I think we'd have a great match.
(And nothing personal against the Sails or the HAF, but the few times you guys have attempted to pirate me - it's been fairly business like. I'd like a bit more RP, but if you have issues with English, I understand. And even when you've missed me, I still send you some credits for the good try.)

Yes, a pirate asking for 50 or 60 million off an ore transport -is- excessive. Even if the transport has 70 million worth of ore, it's quite probable that that 70 million is to be divided amongst a few people for what may have been quite a considerable amount of time spent filling the transport. If you're going to cut those earnings down to something like 3 million per hour (by means of robbing the ore), they might as well just revert to conventional trading.
And before anyone posts 'get escorts', I'm just speaking about a situation in which a pirate does manage to catch an ore transport.
The system is designed so that each player who is involved in the mining can make 30-40+ mil per hour. The reason a single transport carries so much ore (in value terms) is so that miners can spend most of their time mining rather than trading.
I'm sad about this thread because the intention was to add plenty of money to the game to support lots of other associated players (escorts, repair ships, pirates and police/navy hunting the pirates). This seems to have failed as many of the mining groups just refuse to let go of their cargo or cash. They offer escorts and pirates two million for a trip when they are making 40 mil each.
1/3 of the cargo in cargo or credits is a reasonable demand - this could be 20-40 mil for an ore ship. I'll often let people away with a fraction of this if they tell a good story.
*But* if someone mucks me around when I'm pirating them, I'll kill them and take the lot. I'm a pirate and that's what we do.

My numbers were off, then - not surprising, seeing as the only mining ship I have is a Basalt, and half, or thereabouts, of the money I got in the fortnight before the server went down was from escorting transports/watching over miners. Over half, in fact. Though even if I am pretty oblivious to the time taken to fill a transport, 50 million as a demand still seems rather high.
As long as your demand is reasonable most traders will comply. If you make a unreasonably high demand, most traders won't bother with you.
I fly a BWT, 3600 cargo, I don't mind paying 500k to 1.5mil. If I am hauling ore I would expect a higher than normal demand though.
My problem is with idiots like a guy that pirated me a few weeks ago. The route I was running net me around 10mil in profits; this guy demanded 10mil for passing through his system. I offered to pay him 2mil to escort me to my destination which was two systems over. He refused and killed me. He then proceeded to dock on my factions base to sell what he recovered from me. These are the kind of pirates that I despise. Unreasonable demands and then OORP actions.
As for faction pirates? I've yet to have a bad encoutner with them. Though I know that day is coming.
Remember, this is a game. Some of us play to have fun and if you ruin my fun, I will ensure I ruin your fun by not be cooperative.

500k is a low demand; kudos to the pirate if that's all they demand.
Again about 1/3 the value of the cargo is a good guideline. This means something around 2-3 mil for most non-ore cargos but could possibly go up to 5 or 6. For non-ore cargo anything over 6 mil is suspicious and over 10 mil will almost certainly get the pirate smacked down if the trader cares to file a violation report.
And yes, your point about trying to make sure everyone has fun is valid - although this means different things to different people.
