Liners are supposed to be bridging the gap between capital ships and transports right? Something even the Queen of Bretonia can feel comfortable riding in without fearing for her life... I didn't know the Queen was so easy to please - I mean, feeling safe in a ship protected by a shield that even the smallest gull can use? I mean really, those things have even less of a chance surviving than a redshirt does in - No.
After the shields, there's the weapons. Sure, liners aren't supposed to be particularly bristling with weapons (that would make them no better than a cap ship... and by god, the day that there are lolliners is the day I do something horrible to a kitten. Make it read starfox fan fiction perhaps.) but even the the Shire and the Akegata have MORE turrets and the SAME (or more) power generation and MORE cargo space for about half the price (meh, they're called liners, not transports for a reason I guess, but let me rant).
I know that it'd be a major pain to make a whole line of shields just for... four different ships, but would it be too much to ask for liners to be able to mount GB class shields? Perhaps a few mounts for GB class weapons as well? (XD yeah, that one's not gonna happen - but hey, the luxury yacht has one, and that's just just a yacht. Liners are supposed to be Barry bonds to the Yacht's little league-er right?) Of course, increased power generation would be a must for new shields + weapons :/ but you get what you pay for... which is currently about four times more than a regular gunboat, and twice to a quarter more than a good trading transport.
This might sound strange but what about just letting a liner have two class 7 shield slots? As far as i am aware two shields basically double the stregnth of the shielding on the ship.
What they really should implement is a system that restricts the Liners to carry only people (VIP's, Slaves, Tourists, bla bla bla) and make it so that the VIP's only occupy 1 cargo slot, instead of 5 or whatever the occupy. Just an idea. Boosting the actual cargo hold wouldn't be a bad idea either, or lower its price.
Anyway, back to topic.
Why not create a new class of weapons(Liner turrets) that would be something between Cruiser turrets and Battleship turrets. Just an idea.

Regards, Armageddon
An idea worth noting since it won't require allocating a new class of shields- also, might need to test reaction to using two different types of shields on a specific type of weapon.

Oh teh wells, a Shire or Akegata will always be a better Liner than an actual Liner. Balance team for you.
It's not like Liners can be spammed or abused, I mean, only OSC, IND and Researchers can use the full line...
Also junkers, outcasts, and corsairs can use the Slave Liner. - yes, Corsairs, the ones that HATE HATE HATE slavery, can use the slave liner:P
