i could be totally wrong but i believe the U.S. has about 250 million people and they've only been around for a bit over 200 years. also, factoring in medical science which would be far more advanced in Sirius. A lot of the deaths from disease and such that happened in the early years of the U.S. would certainly not happen so far into the future.
