How to Setup a Server?

Hey Everyone -

I've got a box and some friends who want me to throw up server for FL using the Discovery mod.

First, I need to point out that I've never hosted an FL server (and barely even played the game back in the day...) - this is for some friends of mine.

Here's what I did - I installed a fresh copy of the "server" files on the server. I then installed the "Global Server Fix" patch, the Mod Manager and finally the Discovery Mod. I activated the mod, then started the server.

The server appears to start up, but when I look at the console it reports that it's trying to connect to the old MS global server and repeats the error over and over.

I then installed the client on my home computer with the Mod Manager and Discovery mod. I edited the config file mentioned in the Mod Manager window and added a -sXXX.XXX.XX.XX to my server's IP. Fired up the game and nothing (at least nothing mentioned about my server).

Is there something I'm missing?

You should not install the Global Server fix.

Do the following :
Wipe everything FL related on the drive.

Install the game complete from the CD.
Download and install FLMM 1.3. Not 1.4 or any other version. 1.3 works. The other versions introduce wonkyness.
Download and activate the FULL Discovery mod. Not the updates. The FULL mod.

Start FL normally. Select to go online. It will download update 3 to the discovery mod, and install it. Let it do that.

Now you can start FL_Server up, and define servername, player slots etc.

Then connect from your clients to the server with -s xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:2302 added to the FL shortcut.
