There are people in caps who die three to four times a day (yea, excessive, but these are exactly the ones who cause the greatest grief - just stomping around in pure cap fleets, usually 2-4 dreads). The trading to the cap itself might take a while, but it is a one time investment... In above example, the person inside the cap would have lost well over 50M from those deaths. Those are credits that need to be recovered. Factions typically have no issue recovering this with a bit of teamplay. Solitary cap users on the other hand (independants) will have a much harder time recovering those losses. Either way, it forces the capship users to trade or mine a little bit from time to time, or be a lot more careful in where they go.
For the community, it's a win-win-win:
- There's a moneysink for excess credits, making the economy more dynamic.
- People will start respecting dying, especially in expensive ships (like cruisers, battleships and supertransports).
- There'll be a need to trade from time to time. (no more "Kill me plz, I haz no carggggo". Also puts the kybosh on any and all suicide trade routes)
- Gently nudges the players back to smaller ships, but leaves the option open for players who want to spend the time to create caps. But with the death penalty, maintaining these ships won't be as easy anymore.
There'd need to be some kind of provision for players that don't have enough money to take on death... maybe losing the guns instead when that happens, as there was "insufficient funding to make repairs" (which neuters the ship and forces the player to return to their shipyard, but leaves the ship itself intact).
