Not four nights ago...Actually, I was drinking a bloody mary, so it must've still been daylight...Anyway, I went into the bathroom and lit a few candles as I dimmed the overhead light above the mirror.
For five minutes I chanted: "It's all Zelots fault."Over&over&over&over again.
Well, I'm a grown-ass-man, so naturally, I began to feel stupid after a while. I upended my drink, and went to unpack a few issues of the Sandman from one of my comic longboxes.
& now.
Well, well, well. I never would have thought it possible.
...I have the ability to summon demons.
HOW COOL IS THAT?!
Oh, Hey Mike. What brings you her--How you been, Cousin?
Zuke while we're on the subject I wanted to ask you something. So Gali is the master of water and can control water and navigate it at speed, but Kopaka is the master of ice, right? So I mean at what point does that all shift hands?
Like if Gali and Kopaka fell into a vat of cherry slurpee which of the two of them would be in a position to save the other.
Well Dusty, "Master of [element]" was mostly a title that they used in the 2015 Gen-2 reboot, and we don't talk about that one. But as far as the superior Gen-1 goes, that's a pretty good question.
We see a lot of elements or abilities that ought to have some overlap. For example, the first six Toa (Tahu, Pohatu, Onua, Gali, Kopaka, and Lewa) controlled the elements of fire, stone, earth, water, ice, and air, respectively. And from that line-up, in addition to the aforementioned apparent redundancy of water/ice, we also must ask: "Wait, what's the difference between stone and earth?" Additionally, during the Metru Nui arc of 2004-2005, we begin to see a much larger Matoran Universe and are introduced to Toa (and other beings) affiliated with many other "elements". Toa of Iron, Toa of Plasma, Toa of The Green,.. does iron factor into earth/stone? Is plasma just a broader control over fire? Does "the green" (plant life) have any overlap with the element of water? Or light?
Asking questions like yours, Dusty, is just opening a big can of lava eels. What does an individual Toa even control at all really? Who comes out on top in a struggle for absolute supremacy over a mudslide? Or a pool of magma? The answers, unfortunately, aren't entirely satisfactory. Greg Farshtey provides information on a case-by-case basis for topics like these, and the responses are frequently contradictory. This sort of thing is best left as a mental exercise for the reader.
Personally, I like to think that there is some overlap in certain aspects of a Toa's power. In the broadest sense possible, a Toa has the ability to "create and control" their element. I like to think that the "control" of these elements (as in, the telekinetic movement of a boulder, or the temperature of a puddle of water) can be shared between two Toa of similar elemental affiliations. But I also like to think that the "creation" of their element strictly adheres to the purest form their element could take. Both Pohatu and Onua could manipulate the rocks and dirt that occur naturally in their world, but if they wanted to make more of their element, Pohatu would generate solid stone and Onua would create loose soil.
As long as we pretend that post-Bohrok-Kal powers don't exist, this works just fine.
So basically both Gali and Kopaka would be equally competent in escaping from your dastardly cherry slurpee.
