It's sad that the game cannot handle a huge empire. I tried a 4 stars with a ring of planets and a single desert world/pirate base chain to connect it to the star (basically a fortress) in Entrenchment and Diplomacy, but rarely finish these games because the game slows to a bloody crawl by the time you have 50 worlds built up.
Engine lacks optimization and I haven't found any tips to improve performance.

I have tried 8 stars, each having planets and all linked up with wormholes etc etc and i have never experienced any performance issues especially when having a giant fleet.
I guess that would happen if you had 8 empires un-allied all sending a maxed out giant fleet all into the same system for one big giant 8-way free-for-all brawl. that would get ALOT of lag and performance issues even before people zoom into the middle of it!.
Also the engine is a fair few years old now. they did look into multi-core threading and stuff but they coulden't find it possible to do because the engine wasnt capable to do it.
When I got insane by the game I created a 50 stars universe and colonized every planet. Took weeks before I finally broke it up...but it was fun to see how all the ships were moving with less than 10 fps...good training for patience imo.

Quite. And the soundtracks are a whole lot better too. HW 1, Cataclysm... and a bit HW2 as well. Smidgen annoyed at the lowish fleet sizes you can have in the single player campaigns though, unless you use salvage corvettes liberally...
