i am generally not convinced by people pointing out the thin-ness of connections. - a metal beam is much stronger and more flexible than a wooden one, even if its 1/10th of the size.
so - the materials used for such a connection might be more expensive, stronger than other material - reason for not building a ship out of such material alone might be cost efficiency. - well i can pull any reason out of a hat for that.
- other than that - ships in freelancer appear to have a structural integrity field ... or they simply ignore mass.
the connection is meant to be rather thin - to illustrate that the bridge module can rather "easily" blast it away - in case of danger.
it is a transport, the crew wants to flee from lawfuls. - leaving the cargo behind is a tactic ( as explained in the OP )
its just like that - if you face death by the police or military - your chances of escape are greater in a vessel the size and agility of a freighter - than in a train.

This transport looks quite awesome. A question, though, about the feet...what are they? Feet?
I'd be sorry to see the other pirate train go, though. It has very much captured my heart. Perhaps one could call this the pirate whale or pirate supertransport, and leave the train, if there's nothing wrong with it.
Something else: if the train's cockpit is supposed to be detachable, might we also see that modle in the game as a standalone, such as a shf with transport guns?
- a box of containers
- strapped on thrusters ( those feet )
- and a bridge / control center, that is tugged behind ( that one is NOT using its own power to fly - it is just attached to the containers )
* * *
when the connection is blown apart .... the brigde / control center powers up its own engines - and escapes. - the box of containers with the thrusters is left behind - without a control center though... the extrenal cables are cut / disconnected - so the thrusters are kinda useless without a controlling mechanism. - yet not hard to attach even in mid space.
logic would of course NOT build such loose cables - but rather a module that fits into the connecting beam. - but much of ships design is "for show" - ships are meant to be "read" - when it comes to the design... and such cables tell you "this is kind of a field work, these cables are probably easy to connect - and its easier to imagine them when you see them ( even if it makes no real sense ) - rather than pretending they are somewhere inside ..
I don't understand the point of the exposed cables on the Pirate Train. It's just something you wouldn't do on a spaceship. A nice model overall, though.
As for the Lifter... I'm not sure about that. It feels too sophisticated for the rest of the pirate line.
echo - i think i ( or i thought ) - i just explained it....
the point of the cables is to show a certain purpose. - if we applied logic to the ship design .... we would create spheres, cubes, eggshapes or cylinders. - very VERY boring models - but logical.
ships are "descriptive" - they have elements that are there for the sole purpose to be "read" by people with a certain "background" and "experience".
we know planes - so many fighters look like planes, cause we KNOW that these shapes are associated with flight and speed - also with agility. - we have transports that look like trucks - cause thats what we expect a cargo hauler to look like.
i attach cables, cause they represent the idea of a somewhat improvised connection between control tower and self propelled cargo section. - it is a bit like the cabin of a modern truck - and its cargo. - you see a few cables between those two elements.
they serve no logic - they are just there. - another purpose of "exposing" such elements is - cause they look a bit less sophisticated.
liberty would "hide" most of that stuff behind a fancy chassis... but pirates do not. - that is the point.
