Know your limits and play accordingly, you'll start getting better and can be more aggressive against faster ships.

Annoy to death...
Anyhow, just pick the fighter of the faction you like most and train on it.
Odin is not the best VHF in game, yet I'm best when I fly an Odin. It's rather a matter of training than stats.

Where is the Lynx?
Best VHF depends on the player's ZOI and personal skill. You may be great in Katana but if your ZOI is Liberty, how are you going to use it? Same goes for all other ships. Most of them are balanced to fight another VHF from an enemy group withing their ZOI.
So choose where in Sirius you will fly, choose a faction and get the faction's ship or a civilian one.
If you are not good in VHF try HF and if you are looking for a great one - get the Serval.
Serval is really great, Agama as well, but I thought it was about VHFs?
I gave up long ago to be good fighter pilot. It requires frequent training that I does not have time for.
It is really amusing how rusty I become after not seriously PvPing for 1 month for example.
