Yeah. Okay, so I was pondering on this idea yesterday and I couldn't help but to wonder. Since many of us seem to associate non-physical things such as numbers, for example, with some sort of visual entities, I am curious to ask how do you visualize the number line in your mind?
Mine comes from pre-school. We had a classroom such as this and the natural number line from 1 to 100 was displayed above the blackboard, something along the lines of this. So I find myself associating the ''image'' of the number or a specific section of the numbers based on what was drawn on that piece of paper.
So in short, when I think about a certain part of the number line, say, 1-10, I instantly associate it with bushes and the color green, because the background on that paper above the blackboard was a picture of a park or something. 40-50 would associate with dark brown and grays, because the background was a picture of mountains and such.
Thing is, I do it subconsciously. It goes as far as knowing that if I multiply X with Y number, I already know that the result is somewhere within the "Mountains" or "park" or something.
Feels kind of strange now that I think about it.

If this is true with Synesthesia, you have the most ironic nickname ever right now - and so you win internets.
But to the serious part... Now it won't stop bothering me. Since you pointed it out, the only thing I image numbers as it are... sheeps. You know, counting sheeps while you can't fall asleep. To be honest, it's useful sometimes.
When counting/calculating, I dont visualize numbers at all. They're more like a raw data or thought rather than arabic inscription of "1" or other number somewhere in my mind.
Sounds to me like a case of good associative memory that led to a strong linking between the number(s) and the visual elements directly next to it. With my lay knowledge of psychology, I'd dare say that it's nothing else but a case of classic conditioning in which a stimulus gets linked to another stimulus because they are close to each other in some way (time, space, emotionally, etc).
Would be interesting whether it also works the other way round: you see a green bush and associate the number that is linked to it.
This isn't an example of synaesthesia, more like normal associations the human mind puts together. In some cases, making extreme associations could be similar to the symptoms of synaesthesia, but this doesn't go far enough.
