Is it bad to pirate for the money, versus just the interaction?
For instance. If a pirate is actually making money off an encounter, are they bad for doing so? Versus pirating for the interaction, and not caring about making more than say 2mil an encounter?
Also, how much is too much? For instance, if a group of traders are going to make near 300mil for a trip, and a pirate pirates each of them 8 mil, which still leaves the traders with a profit of near 50mil, is the pirate/the person behind the pirate, a toxic/bad player?
If the trader is willing to Roleplay, then give him Roleplay.
If not, just simply pirate him depending on his ship and cargo. Don't ask for ten billion credits out of a 1K transport, for example.
Or, if you're really there to - make - money, don't ask a 5Ker with a cargo full of ore just for one million. Five to ten, at least. My opinion.
I always pick RP vs taking money/PvP, but there aren't many traders out there willing to RP...soo...taking money is my only option.

too much or just the right amount of cash is not so much measured compared to the grand total. - so if a trader makes 50 million a day in say - 10 trips - it means he makes 5 million per trip. - lets say a trip takes 20 minutes.
a pirate asking for 5 million out of the daily total of 50 million might not sound too much - a pirate asking for 5 million in a single encounter is a lot though.
i believe - the perception of a pirate encounter is a brief situation vs. a longer time used to trade - so the pirate makes 5 million in a 30 seconds interaction - while the trader needs 20 minutes to make the same.
that is why it may be perceived as "bad"
if the pirate was asking the trader for 500k each time he meets him - while the trader keeps to his route and the pirate stays un interrupted - the experience is usually much better - although the result is the same, 5 million.

a pirate encounter is usually a good one when the trader gets a real choice. - or an alternative.
as a pirate i found traders being surprisingly happy with the prospect of getting "rerouted" - being able to sell their goods - but at a lower price, maybe at a pirate base.
there would be no profit for my pirate, as i do not get money at all for my time - but inRP - the goods would go to my faction. - many players seem to recognize that - leaving them with a little cash - the pirate with none, but the RPed faction with a full benefit.

in general - a trader sees his profit compared to the entire time he spends trading
a pirate is often seen as a very short and situational encounter - not equal to the time of a full trade - in some cases that is true, in others it is not.
a pirate making a living COMPARABLE to the profits of a trader is usually a detrimental element, because unlike the trader, who GENERATES cash, the pirate only REPOSSESSES it - meaning, for his profit, someone has to suffer, for the traders profit, only the trader suffers ( time )
but if the pirate is not trying to make a comprable profit to the trader but just enough to inRP - make a living - meaning, pay for his expenses plus a little extra - its usually fine
personally i found that asking for up to 2 million from a high value 5k is fine - and pays the bills of a pirate.
as a trader i feel fine when asked for 2 million - even each trip. - but being asked for like 5 million sets off defensive behaviour as in ooc "that is too much". so personally, i do not ask for more than 2 million - usually 500k only.
however i would ask an inRP enemy ( no, traders are not generally enemies, they are "friends" ) to drop the cargo entirely eventually ( like asking an OSC cargoship to transfer all its cargo to a nearby gaian transport - if such a transport is available at the time )
also - i would not ask an ore hauler for 30 million or whatver - even if he made 100 million in the end - personally, i would just feel like a dirty cheat. so even such a ship would only be asked for 2 million. - the guy at the other end is already sweating whenever he sees a red dot on the radar anyway.
None are bad, as far as I see it... if we talk about toxic players, are these kind of pirates that decides to pirate you twice in the same trip knowing you are a good source of income for his activity and pockets of course... but what makes him toxic is that he gets too used to it that he tries to get more off these players, and goes as far as to kill the same trader if not complying once he passes around, and even chase him if he tries to sneak around, just because he didn't give the pirate what he wanted. THAT kills the fun on trading... a.k.a. continuous extorting towards your trade runs kills your fun, and cuts your entire profit. If you get my point, I talk too much and also my english makes me talk non-sense sometimes :p
Tho there are these encounters I have had and I have given (as a pirate myself) which are very pleasant, which I have a looong conversation about RP on politics and stuff like that if you catch my drift. Have any of you got in this kind of encounter? its kind of pleasant, sometimes I have come to an agreement with said pirate... depending on what you both agreed tho... not every player thinks alike. You will also see me around in my Bundschuh indie asking for donations in the Hessian favorite pirate spot (nerd). Ok.. I talked too much hehe.
personally i'm more fan of cargo piracy, but when i pirate for cash the demand rarely goes further than 5 milions (a small calculation of the cargo). Exceptions sometimes are made, especially if the trader is jerking at me. When its obvious the pirated can't pay much for whatever reason, let it go and if i fel inspired, i did some sing songs

This tho... will this apply to the smugglers? Its an indirect way of getting pirated by lawfuls isn't it? those smugglers who can't even RP, and when you kill them for not complying, they insult you on PM... well thats just happened to me, not sure anyone else. But hey, they might be new players as well... it also goes to 'those' kind of traders. You gotta give love to the pirate too you know? sometimes there are 'these' traders that makes you want to spit on them and ruins your mood completely. In some cases Like he said.
